We had a large draw of 16 ladies sign up; the welcoming handicapped format meant that some of these ladies were brand new to the game, only having played a handful of times. There were some stand out performances from newcomers Emma Haley, Olenka Olesnycky, Alex Post and Maura Imel, all coming from strong racquet sports backgrounds and battling with success in their first Court Tennis event. Riviere Wins Fifth Open Singles in a Row by James Zug The 2017 United States Open was a confirmation of greatness. Camden Riviere is world champion and the Open cemented his position as the best tennis player in the world. Outside of world championship matches, Riviere hasn’t lost in a tournament since the finals of the Australian Open in early 2013, more than four years ago. The Racquet Club of Philadelphia hosted the Open, and a wonderful nine days of socializing on all six floors of the club ensued. by John Lumley We had a fantastic draw for this year’s U.S. 50’s hosted by the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. Special shout out to John Prenn & Alexander Anton that came over from the UK to play. Friday’s matches saw the seeding to plan and the match of the day was between John Madzin & Sewall Hodges. Madzin took the first set 6-5 after being 5-2 up. Hodges fought back with some lovely control and serving to take the second set 6-5. U.S. Amateur Doubles Racquet Club of Chicago Winthrop/Cook def. Miron/Cipriano 6-5, 6-2, 5-6, 6-4 Recap by Steve Virgona The Racquet Club of Chicago proudly hosted the U.S. Amateur Doubles Tournament from March 16 – 19, 2017. The event coincided with the Rackets U.S. Amateur Singles and Doubles Tournaments. By having all three events simultaneously, the size and depth of each draw was enhanced significantly. In order to provide guests and members with further opportunity to play tennis, the Racquet Club also hosted a Handicap Doubles Tournament. 2017 Percy Cup by John Lumley With another sold out Percy Cup, eight teams descended upon Philadelphia to try and win the coveted title! New York the defending champions fielded two teams along with Philadelphia fielding two teams. Tuxedo, Washington, Newport and Aiken all had teams in as well. Friday’s play kicked off at 11am heading well into the night finishing at 11pm! This saw Philadelphia 2 take a convincing victory over Aiken to start off strong on the campaign to take the title. Helen Grassi won the Ladies Invitational tournament held at Prince’s Court last weekend. Grassi defeated fellow Bostonian Suzy Schwartz in the singles final 6-0, 6-2. The Singles Finalists teamed up to win the Invitational Doubles title over Washington’s Tess Browne and Aiken’s Claire Voegele 6-1, 6-1. Full report and photos to follow.

Lakewood, N.J., February 17, 2017—Georgian Court University will host a court tennis exhibition match on Thursday, February 23, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the Casino building on GCU’s historic Lakewood campus. The match will pit Camden Riviere, GCU’s newest pro and the current men’s world champion and men’s doubles world champion (world ranked #1) against John Lumley, assistant professional at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia (world ranked #11).
