by Nick Howell Newport hosted the Burke Cup this year. We had twelve entries with six from Newport and the other six coming from DC & Boston. The Burke Cup kicked off with a great match between two of our members — Sewall Hodges & James Chamberlain. James is college student and the grandson of former NTC president, John Murphy. He has been playing the last few months and it’s hard to keep him off the court. Despite James being eight points weaker on handicap, he really made Sewall work hard to grind out a win 6-4 6-5. By John Lumley A Bathurst Academy training camp was held on December 15 and 16 at Georgian Court University (GCU) and Philadelphia. The camp was led by John Lumley. The first day was held at GCU, where John met up with Peter Cipriano (New York), Alex Spence and Todd Meringoff (both Boston). After a quick warm-up, John led the players through a series of doubles drills. Mixing up the teams, John created different scenarios encouraging the players to move and stand in more aggressive positions. From a keen observer…. The Etchebaster trophy was keenly contested at the Racquet Club of Chicago from January 18th-20th 2019. Although it was very cold with lots of snow falling over the weekend, we had 5 players coming in from New York and Washington. There was also a strong field of Chicago players and some notable performances go to Ben Olson and Jonathan Lewis who both had good runs to the semi-final. Gerard (Ged) Eden 20/09/1976 – 08/01/2019 Age 42 Early Life Born in Tasmania to Elizabeth and the late Christopher Eden, he grew up with his older brother Andrew. Educated at Mt Carmel and St Peters Primary schools and St Virgils College, he graduated with an Arts degree from The University of Tasmania in 1997. He went on to study economics and commerce, but moved overseas before completing his second degree. by James Zug In mid-December, the Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the twentieth-first annual United States Court Tennis Association dinner and auction during the traditional Whitney Cup weekend. More than two hundred and twenty people came to the celebration. The dinner, originally conceived in 1998 and chaired for many years by Charlie Johnstone and then Brian Owens, was chaired most ably by Ted Goneos. A new twist was that every guest received a heavy 1.75” commemorative flip coin, with the old USCTA logo on one side and the new one on the other. by James Asher The 2018 Jimmy Dunn Doubles had a record number of participants with over 174 players vying for time on the court tennis, rackets and squash courts. With 44 teams entered for the tennis, we had to change from having a D and E event for tennis to D1, D2 and E draws. 2018 Silver Racquet Tennis Draws Report Silver Racquet Invitational This year’s Silver Racquet Invitational Tennis Singles featured a strong qualification draw which attracted entrants from clubs across the country, as well as from England and France. The first qualification spot was secured by Jeremy Wintersteen who beat up-and-coming Brits, Freddie Dixon and Mike Bailey en route. Brook Hazelton took the other spot in the main draw, beating Shep Skiff then Matt Mackin in two tightly contested matches.
