Clarence A. “Otto” McGowan, Jr. 1935-2021 We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Mr. Clarence “Otto” McGowan, a 54 year Life Member of the Racquet Club. Clarence Aloysius McGowan, Jr., 85 of Chestnut Hill, died on Tuesday April 6, 2021 due to complications from metastatic melanoma.  The eldest of a sister and three brothers, Mr. McGowan was born to Mary Ellen (McKeever) McGowan and Clarence McGowan, Sr. in Philadelphia.  He attended St. Athanasius School, St. Joseph’s Preparatory School and the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Beta… Read the Full Story >

Hear ye, hear ye, signs of hope. Herein you will read that Covid continues to have us mostly mired in a waiting game as the world inches toward inoculation. Yet, there are significant movements afoot and hopeful signs of pathways forward. Here is a summary of what was reported at the February 26 meeting of the Board of Governors. World Championship Moved to 2022

The International World Championship Committee (IWCC) met and unanimously agreed the 2020 World Challenge will now be held over until September 2022 with the challenger remaining as Camden Riviere.  We have the full support of all sponsors, associated third parties, the 2020 World Championship Committee and the Prested Tennis Club management team.   The match dates will be confirmed and communicated as soon as possible.

The status quo continues for amateur play. There are rays of hopeful light shining on our game. Georgian Court University remains closed, and Newport and Boston have suffered regional restrictions and closures. But, at the other courts the amount of intraclub play is generally high, averaging 80% or more of normal court usage. At our clubs, there is no meaningful change to rules or attitudes about hosting guests: friendly and wishful but erring on the side of caution. by John Lumley Eight teams competed for the 2020 Percy Cup. Three from Philadelphia, two from New York, and one each from New England, Washington, and Tuxedo. We used a knock-out draw format for the weekend, with first-round losers going into a back draw. On Sunday, the finals of the back draw were played first with Philadelphia 2 squaring off against Tuxedo. Ladies from Philadelphia, Tuxedo, Newport, and Boston took to the court at the Tennis & Racquet Club for the 2020 Ladies Invitational. Congratulations to Xanthe Ranger on winning the main draw over Amy Wintersteen; a result that will likely crown Xanthe the #1 Ladies’ Amateur in the USA on the USCTA’s next top 15 list. Vrabel wins 2020 Noll Cup

By an interested observer The Racquet Club of Chicago was proud to host the 2020 Noll Cup in February. The draw comprised 16 players with visitors from New York, Philadelphia, and Newport joining the local contingent vying for the title. The matches began on Thursday, with many Chicago players winning through to the quarterfinals. The in-form Max Drake overcame Kirk Baldwin 6-1 6-3, and Matt Pettinelli outlasted Baker Thompson 1-6 6-3 6-4.
