by Dawson Lane A small but enthusiastic group of Junior played in the 2024 Junior Handicap Singles at the Tuxedo Club on January 13th & 14th. Hazel Christensen, Johnny Dawson, Walt Laukitis, Kurt Mueller & Calliope Yannuzzi participated in a round-robin where all the juniors played four matches, with Johnny Dawson & Kurt Mueller earning the right to play each other in the Final. by Dawson Lane No non-Tuxedo entries to the 2024 Parent-Child allowed the conversion to a Family Handicapped Doubles event! This change allowed 12 teams to participate in a fun weekend of handicapped doubles. Three (4) team round robins saw the winners of each group, and the team with the 2nd most games won moved on to the semifinals. Maria Panico & Steve Klepper defeated Lindsay & Gavin Maxwell in an entertaining three-set semifinal to earn their spot in the Final. by Dawson Lane Making his debut overseas, Kurt Mueller of The Tuxedo Club competed in the British Junior National Championship, August 18-20 at the Queen’s Club in London. Calm, composed, and collected, Mueller played classic tennis, finding galleries, tambours, and grills to win three qualifying matches 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, punching his ticket to Sunday’s final. Albie Tomlinson from Oratory was competing for the National title; Mueller took the first game only to have the favor returned in the next game. by Mark Philpott For the second time in two years, a young American traveled to the famous Queens Club in London and captured the British Under 12 Real Tennis title. Kurt defeated last year’s runner-up in the final, Albie Tomlinson. Kurt had a fun-filled trip to London. In addition to playing in the U16 tournament on Saturday and then adding his name on Sunday to the list of the previous U12 winners. Kurt and his dad, Rich, also managed to fit in some sightseeing and a premier league soccer match. A pretty good five days!! I really enjoy attending national junior tournaments. by Camden Riviere It was a busy July at the Westwood Country Club, hosting the Under 26 Championships and a week of international junior competitions between the US, Australia, and the UK. The US team of Freddie Bristowe, Noah Motz, Erik Barker, Henry Smith, & Chase Motz came out victorious in both battles, bringing the US its first-ever joint Val Alen & Clothier Cup victories. by Henry Henmen The 2023 U26 US Singles and Doubles championships were held at Westwood Country Club from 7-9th July. The tournament was set to be a tense competition, with the top 4 seeds all within 0.5 handicap points of each other and all in single figures. Players came to the event from all four (tennis) corners of the planet, coming from places such as Hobart, Seacourt, and Bordeaux. The first day of the competition brought 10 quality matches. The first Junior Development weekend took place on June 2nd and 3rd. Thirteen juniors, five girls and eight boys aged between 11 and 15, participated in 2 days of clinics and doubles match play. The weekend started Saturday morning with basic skills sessions for juniors with little or no court tennis experience. After lunch, more advanced juniors participated in various court tennis drills. Head Professional Ivan Ronaldson and Assistant Professional James Greenley oversaw these. The afternoon session concluded with some doubles match play. The afternoon session seemed to be a big hit, and most of the juniors stayed together and continued having fun at the swimming pool following the day’s tennis session. by an Interested Observer The 2023 Parent-Child and Junior Handicap Singles were contested at the Racquet Club of Chicago from January 14th – 16th, 2023. Families from three US clubs made the trip to Chicago; guests from New York, Tuxedo Park, and Westwood Country Club joined the Chicago members vying for the titles. The weekend started with Steve Virgona giving a two-hour clinic for all of the juniors to give them a chance to get used to the court and its characteristics before the tournament. Elliott Philpott traveled to Queen’s Club for the British Juniors and came home as the Under 12 Champion! The lone American entry, Elliott, plays out of Prince’s Court in Washington. The seven participants were divided into two round-robin groups. After some tight matches, Elliott secured a place in the final by winning the most games in his group.
