“I Wanted to Run”

“I Wanted to Run”

by George Bell Jimmy Burke’s career in court tennis began when he was 14, mopping and scrubbing the floors of squash courts at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia, and came to an end 44 years later in Boston, where he had served as the head professional for many years. Along the way, he worked at four different clubs, won countless tournaments and challenged for the world championship in 1977. But his identity is not court tennis or less so than you might think. Instead, a constriction of misfortunes shaped him and seemed, over decades, to cling to him like a… Read the Full Story >

The Inaugural Alastair B. Martin Cup

A new event – The Martin Cup – was added to the US court tennis fixtures list on October 27-29, 2023. Honoring long-time champion, Alastair B. Martin, the event is an intercity team court tennis doubles tournament for seniors.  It is modeled on the extremely successful and popular Whitney Cup that has been played annually for nearly a century. The “first edition” took place at Westwood Country Club. Like the Whitney Cup, it is a doubles competition but with three pairs aged in their 50s, 60s and 70s, thus matching the World Masters team categories. Washington fielded two teams that… Read the Full Story >

2023 Moore Cup

2023 Moore Cup

by Tony Hollins The Moore Cup is named after John Moore, an avid lawn tennis, court tennis, and squash player. After a hiatus of some years, the NTC resurrected the event as an opportunity for the lawn tennis and court tennis players to meet and enjoy a light-hearted competition. Each doubles pair featured an experienced lawn tennis player and an experienced court tennis player. The pairs then competed in both sports. The divisions were named after prominent players who collected impressive accolades in both games. These players were Richard Dudley Sears, Gene Scott, and Pete Bostwick. Richard Sears was the… Read the Full Story >

Playing in a World Championship – October Pro Tip

Playing in a World Championship – October Pro Tip

by John Lumley It was always a dream of mine to play in the World Championship and I was lucky enough to make it into the World Championship Eliminator process for the first time this year. My first round was against Chris Chapman on my home court at The Racquet Club of Philadelphia. We had a great match which I won 5 sets to 2 with incredible support from the RCOP crowd. I then played Nick Howell in the final eliminator, again winning the bid to play on my home court! Again, the crowd and support were amazing as I… Read the Full Story >

2023 Senior Challenge *Updated*

2023 Senior Challenge *Updated*

by John Lumley This year, we had a great turnout split into two divisions: over 50s and a combined age of 115 years! Both events were played off half handicap. The 50s saw Michael Gorsen and Alex Jamieson screaming through the top half of the draw to reach the final. Anders Cohen and Shawn Herlihy also played well to reach the final, playing and serving well. Cohen and Herlihy came out of the blocks quickly, taking an early lead. Cohen was hitting some great volleys to end points, with Herlihy steady and consistent made for a deadly team. They won… Read the Full Story >

Congratulations to Camden Riviere and his team of Josh Smith and Noah Motz. The air-conditioned atmosphere at Westwood Country Club could not possibly mask the tension as Day Three unfolded. The unofficial odds, emerging across the pond, had tightened considerably. Before Day One, Camden Riviere was 1/10 to win while John Lumley was 33/1; and the Challenge finishing in two days was 8/11. Before Day Three, Lumley… Read the Full Story >

2023 World Championship Day Two

2023 World Championship Day Two

By James Zug Day Two Lumley won 6-4, 3-6, 6-5, 6-5. The match is now 5-3 in favor of Riviere. It was an extraordinary Day Two at Westwood, one of the great classic Day Twos in the history of the World Championship, evocative above all of the Day Two at Queens in 2018. Today the galleries were slightly less dotted by patron gift bags, which were overflowing with local chocolate, the tournament program and two frameable items—the official poster and a Mikko postcard. During the pre-match cocktails upstairs, the canaille enjoyed the two players’ favorite drinks: the Lumley (vodka, pineapple… Read the Full Story >
