by Jim Zug In mid-December 2022, the Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the twenty-fifth annual United States Court Tennis Association dinner and auction during the traditional Whitney Cup weekend. Two hundred and sixteen people came to the silver anniversary dinner. It was one of the largest crowds in USCTA history. The evening, ably chaired by Ted Goneos, was a spectacular black-tie affair. It began with a splendid cocktail hour in the main lounge of the club’s second floor. Especially because of the pandemic, it was a reunion of sorts, with old friends gathering from every club in the U.S. and… Read the Full Story >

by George Bell A lesson with Jimmy Dunn 45 years ago was nothing like a lesson today. He didn’t look you in the eye and had no memory for names. You were summoned to the dedans with a jerk of his square head. “Let me see you cut a forehand,” he would growl, his racquet tucked under his armpit. Already he had an… Read the Full Story >

by Erik Barker The Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the 88th annual Payne Whitney Intercity Doubles competition December 9-11. The tournament was comprised of six teams, (Greentree, New England, Tuxedo-Aiken-Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington), and was, as usual, well-attended and extremely competitive. Play began Friday morning with Greentree combatting Tuxedo-Aiken-Chicago and New York taking on Philadelphia. The steady pair of Dylan Patterson and Hugh McDonald took down Charlie Michele and Jason Mengel (one has to laud Patterson and Mengel for even walking out on court, given recent severe injuries), and Will Thompson and John Beam survived inspired tennis from… Read the Full Story >

by Rob Whitehouse The 41st annual Jimmy Dunn saw its biggest turnout in history, with 186 entrants competing in Court Tennis, Singles Squash, Doubles Squash & Racquets! Two hundred forty-four matches were played in four days at the Racquet Club. We had players attend from all over the country and a few from across the pond. The tennis had fifty-six teams entered with seven different divisions. The atmosphere was incredible, with matches scheduled literary all day long, and the competition was very even in all divisions. Most players enter themselves into multiple events, making them exhausted on Sunday! The Jock… Read the Full Story >
