Tommy Greevy, the longtime tennis pro at Tuxedo, died last Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. Earlier in November, he had celebrated his seventy-eighth birthday. Born in Philadelphia, Thomas Matthew Greevy, Jr. worked at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia from 1956 to 1968 and then as head professional at Tuxedo Club from 1968 to 2010. A beloved coach and mentor, Greevy taught the game to hundreds of men, women and children, champions and beginners alike. A fine player-in 1973 he won the U.S. Professionals-he was a consummate marker, tournament director, friend, storyteller and practical joker. Sixteen teams battled it out in the 2017 Calhoun Witham Doubles Tournament hosted by the Aiken Tennis Club November 2-5. Four former championship teams, eight visiting players from Great Britain, Newport, Washington D.C., Boston and New York competed in two divisions for the title. The tournament was very capably marked by visiting pro – Leon Smart – and Aiken’s Trey Bogue. By Mit Carothers, Tennis Chair Ten teams entered the 2017 Northrop Knox Tournament at the Aiken Tennis Club. Play began on Thursday April 13 with the finals on Easter Sunday April 16th. The entrants included the defending champions, previous winners and a mix of local and out of town players anxious to hoist the trophy. In addition to the doubles tournament, this year’s version also contained a singles competition. We had a large draw of 16 ladies sign up; the welcoming handicapped format meant that some of these ladies were brand new to the game, only having played a handful of times. There were some stand out performances from newcomers Emma Haley, Olenka Olesnycky, Alex Post and Maura Imel, all coming from strong racquet sports backgrounds and battling with success in their first Court Tennis event. by John Lumley We had a fantastic draw for this year’s U.S. 50’s hosted by the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. Special shout out to John Prenn & Alexander Anton that came over from the UK to play. Friday’s matches saw the seeding to plan and the match of the day was between John Madzin & Sewall Hodges. Madzin took the first set 6-5 after being 5-2 up.
