The tournament’s second match was a battle between Tim Carroll and Dan Villiers, with Carroll taking it 6-5 in the final set. Both players were retrieving everything and had some spectacular rallies. by Jacob Faulise The 2023 Greevy Cup was held on January 28-29th at the National Tennis Club, on the grounds of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. This year’s USCTA level championship for the 20’s handicap division displayed some extremely competitive tennis. The draw was on the smaller side due to some last-minute withdrawals, with five players representing the NTC and three making the trip down from Boston. Fourteen players entered the national 50-plus level Wharton Cup at Westwood in January. Nine traveling from other US clubs. All three seeds made it to the semi-finals. The tournament’s biggest upset came in the first semifinal when unseeded John Eder from Boston beat Jericho Seguin, the #1 seed from Westwood, 6/4 2/6 6/3. The other semi between Zach Pallis from Tuxedo and Westwood newcomer Nick Bakos also went to three sets. There was a total draw of sixteen players from Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, Tuxedo, and Newport. There was some fantastic tennis from everyone in the tournament. Libby Gephart (RCOP)played Anwaar Spence from California in the first semi-final, and Anwaar progressed into the final. For the second semi-final, Conard Calcagno (Westwood) was drawn against Brittany Wakim (RCOP). Unfortunately, Brittany had to withdraw, and Conrad had a walk over to the final. by Dawson Lane Play in the 2023 Burke Cup started Friday afternoon the 27th of January with Theo Yannuzzi from The Tuxedo Club taking on Christopher Gould of the New York Racquet & Tennis Club. Twenty matches later Theo Yannuzzi was playing Gordon McMorris in the Final of the 2023 Burke Cup. by an Interested Observer The 2023 Parent-Child and Junior Handicap Singles were contested at the Racquet Club of Chicago from January 14th – 16th, 2023. Families from three US clubs made the trip to Chicago; guests from New York, Tuxedo Park, and Westwood Country Club joined the Chicago members vying for the titles. by Erik Barker The Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the 88th annual Payne Whitney Intercity Doubles competition December 9-11. The tournament was comprised of six teams, (Greentree, New England, Tuxedo-Aiken-Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington), and was, as usual, well-attended and extremely competitive. Play began Friday morning with Greentree combatting Tuxedo-Aiken-Chicago and New York taking on Philadelphia. by Rob Whitehouse The 41st annual Jimmy Dunn saw its biggest turnout in history, with 186 entrants competing in Court Tennis, Singles Squash, Doubles Squash & Racquets! Two hundred forty-four matches were played in four days at the Racquet Club. We had players attend from all over the country and a few from across the pond.
