TEAM USA WINS VAN ALEN & CLOTHIER CUPS!!!!

by Noah Motz The 2019 Van Alen and Clothier Cup trip was terrific for team USA. The tournament week began with a practice day on Monday which consisted of the team playing doubles practice matches and getting used to sharing a court with fellow teammates. Choosing who needed to play up, and who should play back was well thought through and articulated to my teammates by our coach, Ivan Ronaldson. On Tuesday the Limb Cup began which the U.S. was not involved in, so the team took a day trip to Leamington Spa for a few competitive matches against Leamington’s… Read the Full Story >

One Last Newport Handicap Doubles

by Trevor Jones This year’s Handicap Doubles tournament was another smashing success. In a completely sold out draw, the club saw four solid teams rise to the top of their respective brackets. Players representing many of the U.S. clubs and a few from the U.K. took part in the weekend-long event. It took 68 matches to determine the eventual winners. Thanks to the handicap system, there were many close matches, with many being decided by points, as the number of games was deadlocked. Pairs received points for the number of games they won with wins being favorable. Many duos had… Read the Full Story >

by Adrian Kemp The Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the World Masters Over 50s and 55s in early May. A strong US-based contingent was joined by the top amateur players in their age-groups from Australia and the U.K. We were delighted that the event also attracted a team of French players. In the 50s Singles, Guy Devereux and Jeremy Wintersteen were top-seeds, and both progressed to the Semi-Finals with relative ease. There were some fantastic matches in the early rounds, special mention to Peter Holmes and Charles Blanchot who set the tone for the tournament with a hard-fought 3-set match,… Read the Full Story >

A Note From the World Masters: The Heart of the Matter

A Note From the World Masters: The Heart of the Matter

A Note from the World Masters: The Heart of the Matter by George Bell This is the story of a single frightening shot in an unimportant match. The ball struck and felled our opponent such that he lay on the floor flopping — but it is also the story of a reverie triggered by that blow, which brought back to me, slowly, as if summoned from a forgotten place inside, the pleasures that court tennis has offered me. Why such things should occur amid adversity is unknowable. In the days after the match, as our small caravan of competitors in… Read the Full Story >

USCTA Annual Meeting

USCTA Annual Meeting

President’s Report by James Zug Last month the USCTA gathered for its annual general meeting. The venue was Tuxedo Park, which was hosting the World Masters. The meeting was very robust, with representatives of the other three national governing bodies and many members of the USCTA. My president’s report: The state of the U.S. Court Tennis Association is strong. We have 1,089 members, the most we have ever had. This is remarkable. If you had said a quarter century ago that we’d have almost eleven hundred members in 2019, no one would have believed it. Many clubs’ membership rolls have… Read the Full Story >
