U.S. Amateur Singles Final – Boston – April 23, 2017 By Jeffrey Horine Unseeded Todd Meringoff ousted the second, third and fourth seeded players en route to the United States Amateur singles title, held at Boston’s Tennis & Racquet Club from April 21-23. Meringoff defeated Jeremy Wintersteen in the final 6/1, 4/6, 6/4, 6/1. In quarterfinal play, Meringoff dispatched second-seeded Patrick Winthrop in straight sets while third-seeded Peter Cipriano outdueled Alex Spence in a thrilling match 6/5 in the third set. This year’s theme was a “game show” theme inspired by the cherry blossom-esque flowers that decorate the set of The Price Is Right. I called upon local guide Matty Ronaldson and went to LA for a taping of The Price Is Right to do some field research a few weeks prior. Riviere Wins Fifth Open Singles in a Row by James Zug The 2017 United States Open was a confirmation of greatness. Camden Riviere is world champion and the Open cemented his position as the best tennis player in the world. Outside of world championship matches, Riviere hasn’t lost in a tournament since the finals of the Australian Open in early 2013, more than four years ago. The event coincided with the Rackets U.S. Amateur Singles and Doubles Tournaments. By having all three events simultaneously, the size and depth of each draw was enhanced significantly. 2017 Percy Cup by John Lumley With another sold out Percy Cup, eight teams descended upon Philadelphia to try and win the coveted title! New York the defending champions fielded two teams along with Philadelphia fielding two teams. Tuxedo, Washington, Newport and Aiken all had teams in as well.
