It is great to see the enthusiasm which has built around this tournament, so much so that next year we will be running two summer events to give more players a chance to scratch their Newport itch. by Dawson Lane Some of the top Under 26 players not only in the US; but in the world of Court Tennis were in Tuxedo Park June 27th – 29th to compete in the U26 Championships. Local Tuxedo players included Hazel Christensen, Johnny Dawson, Kurt Mueller, Paul Nieuwerburgh & Theo Yannuzzi who have all been a part of the robust junior program coming out of Tuxedo for years. by Dawson Lane Eight teams convened at The Tuxedo Club June 13th – 15th to compete in the 20-25 USCTA Mixed Doubles National Championships. Tournament organizer Tim Chisholm decided to alter the ‘traditional’ format slightly to get as much competitive play as possible for all the entrants. The top (3) teams with team HCPs under 30 were all placed into the semi-finals of the main draw, with the other (5) teams competing in a round robin competition to determine the 4th semi-finalist of the main draw. Although the draw was small, it provided quality competition. The weekend started with fun round-robin doubles, allowingout-of-towners to get to know the court and the tambour. The tournament kicked off on Saturday with Victoria Scott taking on Westwood local Tess Browne. Victoria came out strong with her amazing backhand return of serve, moving Tess around and creating great chases. Early April in New York witnessed another National League Super Event, marking the third such gathering in as many years. This year, the event featured four teams, each comprising four players. Over three nights, twelve thrilling matches were played, complemented by a robust Pro-Am and two informative seminars hosted by the Preservation Foundation. The event attracted nearly all U.S.-based professionals, along with three of the country’s top amateurs. The gathering of talent was truly impressive, with the top players from both the professional and amateur circuits gracing the event. By Ryan Carey The ‘25 Cherry Blossom Doubles was held April 10th-13th at Westwood Country Club. With a whopping 32 teams entered, it was sure to be a fun weekend no matter what transpired. Thursday saw the opening day’s play begin with the ceremonial ringing of the winning gallery gong by David Watson representing a touring group from the Royal Tennis Court. We had an outstanding turnout this year with 16 players in the singles draw and nine teams competing in doubles. Singles Recap:All seeds advanced comfortably through the first round, with no major upsets. One of the highlights was a Friday night thriller between Jeremy Wintersteen and Chase Motz, where Motz came back from 2–5 down to win 6-5 in a match that wrapped up at 11:30pm.
