By any measure, Hadden Tomes 2019 was a huge success. Unlike Gold Racquets, Tuxedo’s annual formal event focused on high-quality court tennis, Hadden Tomes is about dressing up, having fun and playing a bit of court tennis. Last year the theme was James Bond; this year guests got to dress up as their favorite music idol or band. The fun began Friday night, with Rich Mueller, Tuxedo’s highly talented guitar player, leading a multi-hour Karaoke session in the Greevy Room at the Tennis House. Multiple participants eagerly performed crowd-pleasing renditions of songs such as Take It Easy, Free Falling, Dancing Days and… Read the Full Story >
Over the weekend the T&R hosted the US 40s. This is a National Championship with the highly coveted USCTA gold and silver medals on the line. The quality of play was extremely high all weekend which was further highlighted in two fantastic finals on Sunday. First up was the doubles featuring Todd Meringoff and Alex Spence against Todd Martin and Jeremy Wintersteen. The ball striking was exceptional with each player bringing their own flavor to the match. Alex Spence and Todd Meringoff came out on top 6/2 6/2, although this scoreline doesn’t reflect the plethora of extended rallies quality on… Read the Full Story >
This year the T&R expanded the Jimmy Knott to include three new divisions of singles. The thought behind this was that there are very few chances to test your mettle in a level singles tournament outside of the national level championships or in-house club championships. This proved to be very well received with draws that were so large that we had to create a new format! The standard pro set (first to 8 or 10 games) can sometimes be a little too rewarding to the “fast starter” so instead we played best of three sets to 4 games… This explains… Read the Full Story >
A strong tightly contested Open division included World Doubles Champion Tim Chisholm playing with his colleague from Tuxedo Park Josh Dodgson. Tim and Josh won the round-robin group without losing a match to make it to the final on Sunday. The second-place team of Mike Gooding and John Lumley were only edged out narrowly 6-5 in the third in the round-robin action by Tim and Josh this only heightened the anticipation for the final. The match began with Tim rifling a volley return down the line off a railroad from John, that whizzed past Mike making a long chase but… Read the Full Story >

by Trevor Jones This year’s Handicap Doubles tournament was another smashing success. In a completely sold out draw, the club saw four solid teams rise to the top of their respective brackets. Players representing many of the U.S. clubs and a few from the U.K. took part in the weekend-long event. It took 68 matches to determine the eventual winners. Thanks to the handicap system, there were many close matches, with many being decided by points, as the number of games was deadlocked. Pairs received points for the number of games they won with wins being favorable. Many duos had… Read the Full Story >

by Adrian Kemp The Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the World Masters Over 50s and 55s in early May. A strong US-based contingent was joined by the top amateur players in their age-groups from Australia and the U.K. We were delighted that the event also attracted a team of French players. In the 50s Singles, Guy Devereux and Jeremy Wintersteen were top-seeds, and both progressed to the Semi-Finals with relative ease. There were some fantastic matches in the early rounds, special mention to Peter Holmes and Charles Blanchot who set the tone for the tournament with a hard-fought 3-set match,… Read the Full Story >
