by Mit Carothers Seven teams entered the 2019 Northrup Knox Tournament and seven teams entered the Aiken Spring Handicap at the Aiken Tennis Club played April 18-21. The Northrup Knox featured 2 groups in round robin play with the top two teams in each advancing to the semifinals played on Easter morning. Group A winners Michael Sullivan and Robert Glance moved on to play Dan Villiers and Pete Roessler, advancing to the finals with a 6-3, 6-5 win. The Boston Marathon weekend was a fitting backdrop for the 2019 US Amateur Court Tennis Championships. Due to the fantastic depth of the draw, there was no easy path through to the final and the players’ mental and physical strength was truly tested. Ladies Invitational Goes to Lacombe

By Brenda Sabbag Newport hosted the Ladies Invitational on the weekend of April 12th. The tournament was well-attended with twenty players from the home club, Philadelphia and Boston.  There were five round robin groups with the top two finishers from each group moving on to the main draw. The first semifinal featured Philadelphia’s Melissa Purcell versus Newport’s Brenda Sabbag.  Purcell played nearly flawlessly with great defense and speed, and the wily veteran Sabbag simply did not have enough weapons to counteract Purcell’s fantastic play. Purcell won the match 6-3, 6-3. To kick off the day Krish Chawla (St. Joes prep player) took on another St. Joes prep – Michael Barton. The tournament was very well represented nationally, with seven out of the nine active courts in America having at least one member taking part. For many years these have been esteemed tournaments and players arrived days before the event to familiarize themselves with the Tuxedo court. Play started early on Friday as Philadelphia 3 narrowly took down Aiken on countback to play Philadelphia 1 later in the day. Boston played well to beat Washington 1 — two matches to one. Players from New York, Washington, Philadelphia and Charleston joined local players to form a field of 12 players to compete for the title. by Charlie Michele Over President’s Day weekend, The Tuxedo Club hosted the 117thGold Racquets, as well as the US Pro Singles Rackets Championship. Event Chairs Kim Kilgore, Laura Tillsley and Charlie Michele pulled out all of the stops with a full itinerary. On Friday night, there was a delicious pasta bar for players and guests served at the Tennis House. The galleries were packed throughout the evening, with many patrons utilizing the Club-brewed “Tuxedo Ale” on draft to loosen up the vocal chords. The first round matches were pretty straight forward with the first battle of the day going to Morgan Purvis taking it five-games all 40-all against Dick Tanfield in the final set.
