by Ivan Ronladson Following the Junior Academy at the end of July, Westwood hosted the USCTA U11s, U13s, and U15s. In the U11s, Magnus Mitby (Haven Pell’s grandson) won the final 8-0 against Liliana Ronaldson. With a handicap of 65 and only ten years old, Magnus is almost certainly the World #1 in his age group. The U13s and U15s were dominated by Kurt Mueller from Tuxedo. Kurt almost stumbled against Jack Morrison in the U15 semi-final, winning an 8-7, 40 all-match point nail-biter. by Henry Henman At the end of July, the tenth Annual National Court Tennis Junior Academy, funded by the USCTPF Player Development Fund, occurred at Westwood Country Club. The week was an excellent opportunity for the juniors to learn and improve technique, strategy, and match play while they could also meet new friends and faces with a similar passion for court tennis. The academy was proceeded by the U17 and U19 singles championships (reported separately) and followed by the U11, U13 and U15 singles events (results from which will be reported next month). by Ambrose Garson Westwood hosted the USCTA U17s and U19s over the weekend of July 27-28. In the U17s, Kurt Mueller (Tuxedo) played Wyatt Courson (Westwood); during an exciting match, Muller dominated the serve and took the match 6-0 6-0. In the second semi-final, Elliot Philpott (Westwood) played Aidan Bae (Westwood). After many games going to 40-40 game ball, Aidan took most of these points and won the match 6-1 6-1. An extremely warm weekend of weather at The Tuxedo Club saw a small but dedicated group of Under 26 players compete in singles and doubles. Singles Recap Two round-robin groups played for a spot in the singles semifinals, with Henry Smith, Henry Henman, James Rossiter, and Dawson Chisholm earning their spots. This event saw Dawson Chisholm start to make his mark in the court tennis community with wins over Jack Carter and Spencer Yager. by Dawson Lane A small but enthusiastic group of Junior played in the 2024 Junior Handicap Singles at the Tuxedo Club on January 13th & 14th. Hazel Christensen, Johnny Dawson, Walt Laukitis, Kurt Mueller & Calliope Yannuzzi participated in a round-robin where all the juniors played four matches, with Johnny Dawson & Kurt Mueller earning the right to play each other in the Final. by Dawson Lane No non-Tuxedo entries to the 2024 Parent-Child allowed the conversion to a Family Handicapped Doubles event! This change allowed 12 teams to participate in a fun weekend of handicapped doubles. Three (4) team round robins saw the winners of each group, and the team with the 2nd most games won moved on to the semifinals. Maria Panico & Steve Klepper defeated Lindsay & Gavin Maxwell in an entertaining three-set semifinal to earn their spot in the Final. by Dawson Lane Making his debut overseas, Kurt Mueller of The Tuxedo Club competed in the British Junior National Championship, August 18-20 at the Queen’s Club in London. Calm, composed, and collected, Mueller played classic tennis, finding galleries, tambours, and grills to win three qualifying matches 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, punching his ticket to Sunday’s final. Albie Tomlinson from Oratory was competing for the National title; Mueller took the first game only to have the favor returned in the next game. by Mark Philpott For the second time in two years, a young American traveled to the famous Queens Club in London and captured the British Under 12 Real Tennis title. Kurt defeated last year’s runner-up in the final, Albie Tomlinson. Kurt had a fun-filled trip to London. In addition to playing in the U16 tournament on Saturday and then adding his name on Sunday to the list of the previous U12 winners. Kurt and his dad, Rich, also managed to fit in some sightseeing and a premier league soccer match. A pretty good five days!! I really enjoy attending national junior tournaments. by Camden Riviere It was a busy July at the Westwood Country Club, hosting the Under 26 Championships and a week of international junior competitions between the US, Australia, and the UK. The US team of Freddie Bristowe, Noah Motz, Erik Barker, Henry Smith, & Chase Motz came out victorious in both battles, bringing the US its first-ever joint Val Alen & Clothier Cup victories.
