The event kicked off on Thursday evening with the return of the Aiken Spring Invitational. Thad Gray and John Iole opened proceedings against Kate and Dan Villiers, with the two left-handers delivering an impressive performance to win 6/4, 6/2.
Defending champions Geoff Ellis and Jason McAlhaney followed in the cocktail match against the fast-improving Daly brothers, James and Madison. It was the Daly brothers who came out on top, combining powerful hitting with sharp volleying. A large gallery enjoyed the evening’s play, with drinks flowing and oysters adding to the atmosphere.
Friday featured a full day of action from 10am through to 10pm. The standout match saw an excellent win from the Boston pairing of Nick Summerlin and Michael O’Conner. Despite holding a combined handicap of 38 and playing off 30, they edged current club champions Vaughan Massie and Jason Mengel in a thrilling encounter, 6/5, 5/6, 6/4. The day concluded with Southern BBQ and another strong evening of tennis.
Saturday marked the final day of group play. In the Knox, the top three pairs from each group advanced, with second and third place finishers contesting quarterfinals later that day, while group winners progressed directly to the semifinals.
In the Aiken Spring Invitational, five teams competed, with only the top two advancing to Sunday’s final. Brien Grande and Bauer Vaughters went undefeated in the group and set up a final against Thad Gray and John Iole.
Knox group winners were James and Madison Daly, alongside Nick Summerlin and Michael O’Conner, who were emerging as early favorites. In the first quarterfinal, Vaughan Massie and Jason Mengel proved too strong for Morgan Purvis and Jim Zug, winning 6/2, 6/0. Morgan stepped in at short notice after Jim’s original partner was forced to withdraw due to illness.
The second quarterfinal was far tighter, with Geoff Ellis and Jason McAlhaney prevailing 6/4, 6/5 to keep their title defense alive. The day concluded with a fantastic outdoor dinner prepared by Robert Glance, taking full advantage of the warm evening.
Sunday began with the Knox semifinals. In the first, Ellis and McAlhaney faced Summerlin and O’Conner, taking the opening set 6/3. Summerlin and O’Conner responded strongly to lead 5–1 in the second, but Ellis and McAlhaney produced a remarkable comeback, playing flawless tennis to steal the set and match, 6/3, 6/5.
The second semifinal saw the Daly brothers take on Massie and Mengel. After a high-quality opening set filled with long rallies, the match took a difficult turn at 5/4, deuce, when Jason Mengel chased down a ball and collapsed with an Achilles injury. His partner Vaughan—an orthopedic surgeon—quickly assessed the situation and confirmed the injury, bringing the match to an unfortunate end. The Daly brothers advanced to the final, and we wish Jason a full and speedy recovery following surgery performed shortly after.
After a short break, attention turned to the Aiken Spring Invitational final. Brien Grande and Bauer Vaughters faced Thad Gray and John Iole in an excellent contest. Grande and Vaughters proved too consistent throughout, winning 6/4, 6/4 to claim the title and etch their names on the trophy following the event’s long-awaited return.
Following presentations, players, members, and guests enjoyed brunch and cocktails before the final match of the weekend—the Northrup Knox Final. Ellis and McAlhaney faced the Daly brothers, who had defeated them earlier in the group stage. The Dalys pushed hard, reaching 5-all in a closely contested first set, but Ellis and McAlhaney’s experience proved decisive. With Jason dominant at the net and Geoff rock-solid from the back, they closed out the match 6/5, 6/4 to retain the title and secure back-to-back Northrup Knox victories.
