2019 Greevy Cup @ The Tuxedo Club
The 2019 Greevy Cup (for handicaps 20-29) was dominated by entrants from the home club of Tuxedo, with 7 of the 10 entrants from Tuxedo.
The (4) semi-finalists were all expected based upon their handicaps, and represented (4) different clubs. Prince’s Court & Radley – Benedict Yorston
Boston Tennis & Racquet Club – Ben Hudson
The Tuxedo Club – Nick Sonne
New York Racquet & Tennis Club – Matt Mackin
The first semi-final pitted Yorston and Hudson, and the fans were treated to a nip and tuck first set with Yorston getting over the line 6/5. Hudson made a number of uncharacteristic unforced errors to start the second set allowing Yorston to cruise to a 6/1 second set. Tuxedo’s hope of Nick Sonne had a great deal of family support in the dedan as he took on NY’s Matt Mackin. Mackin got off to a quick start in the first, but Sonne was able to reel it back in with some classic tennis. Mackin’s athleticism and retrieving earned him the last few games and a 6/4 first set. Sonne; having pulled a muscle earlier in the match started to feel the effects as Mackin rolled to a 6/1 second set.
The final saw the top two seeds provide the crowd with a very exciting match, culminating in a 3/6 6/2 6/5 victory for young Benedict Yorston. Mackin’s athleticism and aggressive play kept Yorston on the defensive in the first set and unable to find any sort of length. Yorston was able to start controlling his length better in the second set enabling him to even the match. The third set was nip and tuck throughout and entertaining for the small but engaged crowd, including Hall of Famer and Court Tennis Legend himself….Tommy Greevy!!!
