Over the weekend of March 12th through 14th, 6 teams battled for the Lord Percival Cup. The Lord Percival Cup, which is a Whitney Cup style team doubles format, brought teams from Boston, New York, Newport/Tuxedo, and three teams from the host club, Philadelphia. The tournament is held in conjunction with the Irish Invitational squash tournament. Great times were had by all during Friday’s Irish Invitational Dinner/Dance. This years US Amateur Championship March 11-14 attracted a small field of players to the Aiken Tennis Club. All of those who did participate enjoyed the usual warm and gracious reception by the members of the ATC. Results of the singles competition were as follows: First round action saw local Rakish Jasani fall to Princes’ Court member Kris Motz 6/1 and 6/5. John Motz didn’t let age get the better of him as he won the US40s Singles Championship 6-1 6-5 over a hobbled Bill Barker. The finalists teamed up to take on Hufford/Zug in the Doubles Final. Hufford and Zug got off to a blistering start taking the first set 6/1 to the surprise on the gallery. However, Motz/Barker finally gained their second wind and in doing so gained the second set 6/5 in a tense final game. Aiken – Camden Riviere defeated Ruaraidh Gunn in the second leg of their Eliminator. The score was 6/0,6/0,6/0. Riviere will play Steve Virgona in the Final Eliminator. That will be the best of 13 sets and will take place in Tuxedo on March 18,20 & 21. Ticket information will be posted this weekend.
