2016 U23s & U26s
by John Lumley We had players from across the country coming to Philadelphia to take home the National Under 23’s & Under 26’s trophies. In the singles Erik Barker was the no.1 seed for both 23’s & 26’s. In the 23’s he had a good match against Chase Motz but proved too much winning 8-2. Paul Monaghan was the no.2 seed and took down Noah Motz 8-4 after being 4-1 down at the start. The final saw power Paul vs eager Erik where Erik was getting everything back from good cut shots to 120mph forces. He won 10-4 to take… Read the Full Story >
2016 World Championship – “The Wait is Over”
by James Zug The Wait is Over It has been forty-two years since an American won the world championship in tennis singles. In the years since Jimmy Bostwick took the title in 1974, two British men and two Australian men have reigned as world champion. Today in Newport, the wait is over. The day after his twenty-ninth birthday, Riviere now succeeds his opponent, Rob Fahey, as world champion. It was a decisive final day.… Read the Full Story >
2016 World Championship Report – Day 2
The Second Day By James Zug The crucial moment, perhaps, in the day’s play and in the 2016 world championship in general, came in the eighth set. It was 3-3. Rob Fahey had taken the previous, seventh set and now had roared back from a 1-3 deficit. He was up 40-0. He was on the verge of pushing through and squaring the day at two-sets all. Thus, the overall score would be 5-3, and the final day of play on Saturday would be promising or at least realistically possible, with a tiny bit of margin of error and Fahey… Read the Full Story >
2016 World Championship Begins – Day 1
by James Zug The 2016 Men’s World Championship began with great pomp, circumstance and sadness at the National Tennis Club. Jonathan Howell, president of the International Real Tennis Players Association, introduced the challenger, Camden Riviere, the defending champion, Rob Fahey and the marker, Drew Lyons. B.J. Whitehouse sang the national anthems of both Australia and United States. Then silence descended among the hundreds of spectators, as everyone stood and honored the memory of Jay Schochet, the late torchbearer of tennis in Newport. Both players wore bright sneakers—Riviere’s were red, Fahey orange—with orange shoelaces. Otherwise, all in white. Both looked… Read the Full Story >
