By John Lumley A Bathurst Academy training camp was held on December 15 and 16 at Georgian Court University (GCU) and Philadelphia. The camp was led by John Lumley. The first day was held at GCU, where John met up with Peter Cipriano (New York), Alex Spence and Todd Meringoff (both Boston). After a quick warm-up, John led the players through a series of doubles drills. Mixing up the teams, John created different scenarios encouraging the players to move and stand in more aggressive positions. Gerard (Ged) Eden 20/09/1976 – 08/01/2019 Age 42 Early Life Born in Tasmania to Elizabeth and the late Christopher Eden, he grew up with his older brother Andrew. Educated at Mt Carmel and St Peters Primary schools and St Virgils College, he graduated with an Arts degree from The University of Tasmania in 1997. He went on to study economics and commerce, but moved overseas before completing his second degree. by James Zug In mid-December, the Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the twentieth-first annual United States Court Tennis Association dinner and auction during the traditional Whitney Cup weekend. More than two hundred and twenty people came to the celebration. The dinner, originally conceived in 1998 and chaired for many years by Charlie Johnstone and then Brian Owens, was chaired most ably by Ted Goneos. A new twist was that every guest received a heavy 1.75” commemorative flip coin, with the old USCTA logo on one side and the new one on the other. by John Lumley We had a very strong turnout for the U.S. Amateur in Philadelphia. Nineteen players arrived on Friday for a full day’s play. As with any court tennis event the first two matches took over four hours and put us two hours behind schedule. Alex Spence took down Henry Smith in a great match 6-5 5-6 6-0. Noah Motz had the win of his career to date taking down Jeremy Wintersteen 5-6 6-5 6-4 and generating some scary pace when forcing. By Chris Aley Prince’s Court welcomed players from Newport, New York, Boston and Philadelphia to the 2018 USCTA Amateur Doubles championship – the draw boasted some of America’s finest players, and the standard of play was exceptional. Early rounds all went the way of the seeded players, with local pair Dan Sternberg and Vu Hoang having set points against the number 2 seeds Danny McBride (Princes) and Todd Meringoff (Boston) – eventually losing 5-6 1-6. by Mit Carothers The U.S. 60s & 70s were hosted by the Aiken Tennis Club Friday, March 16th – Sunday, March 18th. Sixteen players, eleven of whom played in multiple events, booked the court for ten hours of practice on Thursday prior to the start of the tournament on Friday morning. Singles matches kicked the tournament off at 8:30 Friday morning. In the 70s singles Dick Tanfield defeated Temple Grassi 6-1, 6-0.
