It was also the first dinner in which everyone paid in advance by PayPal. A splendid cocktail hour started the evening. Peter di Bonaventura brought numerous photographs and trophies from Greentree, which dotted the main reading room at… Read the Full Story >

by John Lumley We had players from across the country coming to Philadelphia to take home the National Under 23’s & Under 26’s trophies. In the singles Erik Barker was the no.1 seed for both 23’s & 26’s. In the 23’s he had a good match against Chase Motz but proved too much winning 8-2. Paul Monaghan was the no.2 seed and took down Noah Motz 8-4 after being 4-1 down at the start. The final saw power Paul vs eager Erik where Erik was getting everything back from good cut shots to 120mph forces. He won 10-4 to take… Read the Full Story >

by James Zug The 2016 Men’s World Championship began with great pomp, circumstance and sadness at the National Tennis Club. Jonathan Howell, president of the International Real Tennis Players Association, introduced the challenger, Camden Riviere, the defending champion, Rob Fahey and the marker, Drew Lyons. B.J. Whitehouse sang the national anthems of both Australia and United States. Then silence descended among the hundreds of spectators, as everyone stood and honored the memory of Jay Schochet, the late torchbearer of tennis in Newport. Both players wore bright sneakers—Riviere’s were red, Fahey orange—with orange shoelaces. Otherwise, all in white. Both looked… Read the Full Story >

We kicked off the 2016 ‘over 70 nationals’ here in Chicago today. Outside it was a balmy 55 degrees, but inside it was a perfect 72. The match was Delray Beach – Chicago Vs Newport. Although the score was 6/0 6/0, it doesn’t indicate how competitive this match was from the beginning. Tim Merrill, Chicago’s only competitive player, teamed up with crafty veteran Russell Corey; both played well in spurts but it wasn’t enough to overcome the fine team from Newport. Alex Walsh and Jonathan Pardee showed why they are one of the best teams in the land. Both used… Read the Full Story >

The last time the US Amateur and the US 50’s were held in Aiken in 2010 and 2009 respectively, we had a difficult time attracting competitive out of town players to round out the draws. In 2016 the opposite was the case, we had 9 players in the US AM singles, 6 teams in the doubles, 14 players in the US 50’s singles and 7 teams in the doubles. Five of the players were visitors from the UK, one of which was a… Read the Full Story >

We had a fantastic turnout at this year’s US Over 60’s at The Racquet Club of Philadelphia. The first round singles saw Sewall Hodges play very steady and consistent Tennis to beat Rob Carlson but he was stopped by a very strong Bruce Manson who was serving and volleying superbly. Rowan Carroll played some fantastic Tennis to beat Jules Zacher but again Bruce Manson was too steady for Rowan in the end winning 6-3,6-3 to secure his place in the final. On the other half of the draw Dick Tanfield and Greg Van Schaack were too strong for their opponents… Read the Full Story >

By Camden Riviere We were treated to a wonderful weekend of junior tennis at the National Tennis Club in January for the U.S. Junior Handicap. Alongside our 6 local players, we were happy to have two traveling players (Michael Hill from Boston and Tess Browne from Washington) attend the event. Friday opened with a clinic and pizza party at the club for all the contestants. Juniors were also treated to a great talk by NTC Club President Steve DeVoe, who spoke about the history of court tennis, the Newport court, and court etiquette. By Camden Riviere The top Ladies in the US descended upon Newport for the Ladies Invitational, helping us to host a great weekend of tennis. With over ten players in attendance we were treated to some high level tennis, as well as a wonderful atmosphere. Unfortunately, the first snowstorm of the season decided to put a damper on the weekend, forcing snow on to the court on Saturday, and forcing us to stop play for the day. As a precaution to the players, and to help alleviate travel home, it was decided to postpone the doubles semi-finals and finals, as… Read the Full Story >
