By James Zug Last week the Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the twentieth annual United States Court Tennis Association dinner and auction during the traditional mid-December Whitney Cup. The platinum dinner, originally conceived in 1998 and chaired for many years by Charlie Johnstone, was chaired this year by Brian Owens and Zack Sacks. A splendid cocktail hour started the evening. Meringoff wins 2017 U.S. Amateur Singles

U.S. Amateur Singles Final – Boston – April 23, 2017 By Jeffrey Horine Unseeded Todd Meringoff ousted the second, third and fourth seeded players en route to the United States Amateur singles title, held at Boston’s Tennis & Racquet Club from April 21-23.  Meringoff defeated Jeremy Wintersteen in the final 6/1, 4/6, 6/4, 6/1. Riviere Wins Fifth Open Singles in a Row by James Zug The 2017 United States Open was a confirmation of greatness. Camden Riviere is world champion and the Open cemented his position as the best tennis player in the world. Outside of world championship matches, Riviere hasn’t lost in a tournament since the finals of the Australian Open in early 2013, more than four years ago. The Racquet Club of Philadelphia hosted the Open, and a wonderful nine days  of socializing on all six floors of the club ensued. Tuxedo takes home the Percy Cup

2017 Percy Cup by John Lumley With another sold out Percy Cup, eight teams descended upon Philadelphia to try and win the coveted title! New York the defending champions fielded two teams along with Philadelphia fielding two teams. Tuxedo, Washington, Newport and Aiken all had teams in as well.  Friday’s play kicked off at 11am heading well into the night finishing at 11pm! The 2017 National Level Single Championships – the Super Bowl of tennis – were held on Super Bowl weekend. Sixty-eight players entered the five divisions – Greevy Cup (handicaps 20-29) – Chicago, Noll Cup (handicaps 30-39) – Philadelphia, Burke Cup (handicaps 40-49) –Tuxedo, Wharton Cup (handicaps 50-59) – Newport and Hickey Cup (handicaps 60+) – Washington. By James Zug Photos by Michael Do The Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the nineteenth annual United States Court Tennis Association dinner and auction during the traditional mid-December Whitney Cup.   More than two hundred people attended the dinner, which was chaired by Brian Owens and Dan Laukitis. It was the largest annual dinner since the USCTA’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2005. by John Lumley We had players from across the country coming to Philadelphia to take home the National Under 23’s & Under 26’s trophies. In the singles Erik Barker was the no.1 seed for both 23’s & 26’s. In the 23’s he had a good match against Chase Motz but proved too much winning 8-2. Paul Monaghan was the no.2 seed and took down Noah Motz 8-4 after being 4-1 down at the start. 2016 World Championship Begins – Day 1

by James Zug The 2016 Men’s World Championship began with great pomp, circumstance and sadness at the National Tennis Club. Jonathan Howell, president of the International Real Tennis Players Association, introduced the challenger, Camden Riviere, the defending champion, Rob Fahey and the marker, Drew Lyons. B.J. Whitehouse sang the national anthems of both Australia and United States. Then silence descended among the hundreds of spectators, as everyone stood and honored the memory of Jay Schochet, the late torchbearer of tennis in Newport.   Both players wore bright sneakers—Riviere’s were red, Fahey orange—with orange shoelaces.
