by John Lumley We had a very strong turnout for the U.S. Amateur in Philadelphia. Nineteen players arrived on Friday for a full day’s play. As with any court tennis event the first two matches took over four hours and put us two hours behind schedule. Alex Spence took down Henry Smith in a great match 6-5 5-6 6-0. Noah Motz had the win of his career to date taking down Jeremy Wintersteen 5-6 6-5 6-4 and generating some scary pace when forcing. By Chris Aley Prince’s Court welcomed players from Newport, New York, Boston and Philadelphia to the 2018 USCTA Amateur Doubles championship – the draw boasted some of America’s finest players, and the standard of play was exceptional. Early rounds all went the way of the seeded players, with local pair Dan Sternberg and Vu Hoang having set points against the number 2 seeds Danny McBride (Princes) and Todd Meringoff  (Boston) – eventually losing 5-6 1-6. by Mit Carothers The U.S. 60s & 70s were hosted by the Aiken Tennis Club Friday, March 16th – Sunday, March 18th. Sixteen players, eleven of whom played in multiple events, booked the court for ten hours of practice on Thursday prior to the start of the tournament on Friday morning. Singles matches kicked the tournament off at 8:30 Friday morning. In the 70s singles Dick Tanfield defeated Temple Grassi 6-1, 6-0. By James Zug Last week the Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the twentieth annual United States Court Tennis Association dinner and auction during the traditional mid-December Whitney Cup. The platinum dinner, originally conceived in 1998 and chaired for many years by Charlie Johnstone, was chaired this year by Brian Owens and Zack Sacks. A splendid cocktail hour started the evening. U.S. Amateur Singles Final – Boston – April 23, 2017 By Jeffrey Horine Unseeded Todd Meringoff ousted the second, third and fourth seeded players en route to the United States Amateur singles title, held at Boston’s Tennis & Racquet Club from April 21-23.  Meringoff defeated Jeremy Wintersteen in the final 6/1, 4/6, 6/4, 6/1. Riviere Wins Fifth Open Singles in a Row by James Zug The 2017 United States Open was a confirmation of greatness. Camden Riviere is world champion and the Open cemented his position as the best tennis player in the world. Outside of world championship matches, Riviere hasn’t lost in a tournament since the finals of the Australian Open in early 2013, more than four years ago. 2017 Percy Cup by John Lumley With another sold out Percy Cup, eight teams descended upon Philadelphia to try and win the coveted title! New York the defending champions fielded two teams along with Philadelphia fielding two teams. Tuxedo, Washington, Newport and Aiken all had teams in as well.  Friday’s play kicked off at 11am heading well into the night finishing at 11pm!
