2024 World Masters Championships – The USCTA is sponsoring four age-specific teams to represent the US in this year’s World Masters Championships in London, with our senior teams playing for the Cockram Trophy (50+), the Bostwick Cup (60+), the Danby Trophy (70+), and the Munoz Trophy (80+) against Australia, France, and the UK. Any US players who might be interested in playing in the individual events, which follow the team events, have an April 22 deadline to fill out the individual entry form. by Dawson Lane The 2024 Wharton Cup at The Tuxedo Club had a strong Tuxedo flavor with a few non-Tuxedo players sprinkled in for some spice! Jeremy Kidde barely snuck into the draw with a 49.7 handicap, and as the #1 seed and prohibitive favorite, he lived up to the handicap and seed by running away with the tournament, only losing three games all tournament. by Tony Hollins The National Tennis Club at the International Tennis Hall of Fame was proud to host the US 60s & 70s national championships in both singles and doubles. It was fantastic to see the depth of the fields in all four events, with players representing seven of the nine active clubs in the USA. Due to the strong turnout, the matches began on Thursday evening, with many players arriving on Monday or Tuesday to familiarize themselves with the court. by Leon Smart The 2024 Burke Cup occurred at the Tennis & Racquet in Boston on January 26th – 28th. Players from Boston, New York, Tuxedo, Newport, Aiken and Philadelphia made up the field. The tournament started with the number 1 seed, Brad Ursprung, taking on fellow T&R member Connor Richmond. Connor stunned Brad in the first set, winning it 6-1. By an interested observer The Etchebaster trophy was contested at the Racquet Club of Chicago from January 19th – 22nd, 2024. Six players traveled to Chicago from New York, Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington D.C and Aiken. There was also a strong field of 16 Chicago players, and a notable performance goes to Chicago’s Lawson Buhl, who lost narrowly in the R16 to #2 seed Jason McAlhaney 6-3, 4-6, 6-5. The Etchebaster final of 2024 was between Chicago’s John Pak and Westwood Country Club’s Conrad Calcagno. by James Greenley The Hickey Cup was played at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ. There was a full draw of 16 players from Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, Tuxedo and Newport. There was some superb tennis from everyone in the tournament. There were two draws. Those who didn’t get through the first round were entered into the plate draw. In the plate, the final involved the young and upcoming player Kurt Mueller and Randy Barr. Randy got off to a good start, taking the lead 6-1. by Ivan Ronaldson With the Hickey Cup at Lakewood oversubscribed, Westwood held a Level event for handicaps 70 and above. A total of 15 players entered, with nine locals and six traveling from Philadelphia and Newport. In the top half of the draw, both the 1st and 4th seeds were knocked out in their first match, leading to a semifinal between unseeded Brian Lutz and Andy Davidson.
