It would be hard to imagine that the 2018 Pell Cup would be larger than last year’s event – but it exceeded it by two teams and seven more matches which added at least seven extra hours of court time! We were very pleased to welcome Nick Wood back, coming all the way from Hampton Court Palace, UK along with his partner, Josh Smith, playing in the Open Division. 2018 U.S. Mixed Doubles

Tuxedo hosted the 2018 U.S. Amateur Mixed Doubles. Will Hopton and Xanthe Ranger defeated Pat Winthrop and Phoebe Livingston. The score was 4-6,6-2,6-1. Rich Mueller and Jeannie Heffernan won the back draw over Dan Laukitis and Mary Livingston.

The Racquet Club of Philadelphia was pleased to host the U.S. Junior Doubles U19 Lieb Cup, U17 and U15 in conjunction with the National Parent Child. The field consisted of twelve juniors ranging from 14 to 18 years old, so the RC Proshop had every player in the U19 division where each player partnered with each other. The format was terrific for all players getting a huge amount of court time and match experience. 2018 U23, U26 National Championships

by Ivan Ronaldson What a great turnout this year. Fifteen entries, six of whom were in serious contention for gold medals in the main events. Friday’s A division matches were all nail-biters, going three sets in the singles and 9-8, 9-7, or 9-6 in the doubles. Philly’s rapidly improving Henry Smith (Henry’s handicap has dropped 20 points in the last year) beat out one of the home favorites, Noah Motz, 1-6 6-5 3-6. 2018 Spring Invitational

The fourth annual Spring Invitational and Pro-Am was hosted by the Racquet and Tennis Club May 3rd to 6th.  Sixteen players competed in the Main Draw, of which eight were professionals and eight were amateurs. Shep Skiff and Matt Mackin won the two Qualifier spots that took place Wednesday and Thursday, and included Manek Mathur, Eric Bedel, Phil Stockton and Dylan Patterson, all representing New York. Last month the Tennis and Racquet Club hosted another edition of it’s flagship event, the Sears Cup. There were upward of 150 matches played, spread over the three sports (court tennis, racquets, and squash). Alongside the athletics the participants and members enjoyed a Saturday evening 1920’s themed shin dig featuring the Gatsby Gang Jazz Band. The Racquet Club of Chicago proudly hosted the 2018 U.S. 40s Singles and Doubles from May 11-13. The tournament was very evenly matched with the top seven players in the draw within 4 handicap points of each other and winning would come down to who performed at their best in the pivotal moments. Ryan Carey was in dominant form from the start as he dispatched British hopeful Nick Browne 6-5, 6-2. Carey followed that up by beating the in-form local, Max Drake, by the same score line.
