With only 7 teams in the draw; top seeds Will Hopton & Jon Crowell moved through to the semifinals without having to play a match. by James Asher The 2018 Jimmy Dunn Doubles had a record number of participants with over 174 players vying for time on the court tennis, rackets and squash courts. With 44 teams entered for the tennis, we had to change from having a D and E event for tennis to D1, D2 and E draws. Matches were played each day from 7AM to midnight – sixteen hours of tennis per day – a record! Combined with the Jock Soutar and squash draws there were 246 matches played over the weekend. 2018 Silver Racquet Tennis Draws Report Silver Racquet Invitational This year’s Silver Racquet Invitational Tennis Singles featured a strong qualification draw which attracted entrants from clubs across the country, as well as from England and France. The first qualification spot was secured by Jeremy Wintersteen who beat up-and-coming Brits, Freddie Dixon and Mike Bailey en route. Brook Hazelton took the other spot in the main draw, beating Shep Skiff then Matt Mackin in two tightly contested matches. by James Asher On Saturday September 29th , Philadelphia and Washington travelled to Georgian Court to play their Annual Intercity match. Both clubs had a fantastic turnout for the event with eighteen players showing from the clubs together. With matches starting at 11am a few Philadelphia players showed up at 10am to do a mini clinic with me to get used to the court. From 11am until 6pm the court was in full force with all matches pretty competitive. Philadelphia started the day strongly winning the first two matches 8-7 and 8-3 respectively. This is a great opportunity to shake off the rust and get three guaranteed competitive matches. The T&R got a well rounded draw of 14 players which produced some tight match ups even in the early rounds. 2017/18 National League Final Team New England/Philadelphia took on Tuxedo in the final of the National League hosted at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. First up was John Lumley vs Josh Dodgson which started at a quick pace. Both players retrieved well with Dodgson looking good. Two games found a little burst of momentum for Lumley where he went to a 4-2 lead. Dodgson, playing a solid game from the serving end, got it back to 4-3 before Lumley stepped it up and closed out the set 6-3! 2018 Fall Invitational by John Lumley We had a great field for this year’s Fall Invitational held at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. With the first round matches underway the best match of the day was Tony Hollins vs Tom Brownlie. Brownlie, with home court advantage and playing very solid tennis, took an early lead but Hollins was able to rely on his experience to stay in the match and reach five-games-all in the first set.
