Greentree

Greentree

by George Bell On a Sunday morning in January, I turned off a major roadway in Manhasset, NY and entered Greentree, an estate marked by a modest, painted sign that you could easily miss. Malls and car dealerships had displaced the Gold Coast mansions long ago, but not this one. Hemmed in by the neon of another century, Greentree had defied the odds, frozen the clocks. The quiet was immediate. The property’s entrance road gave passage to a forgotten world, where great stretches of cold, blue light lay across an inch of new snow.  The security guard stepped out of… Read the Full Story >

2019 Jimmy Dunn – Outstanding Weekend

2019 Jimmy Dunn – Outstanding Weekend

by James Asher This year’s Jimmy Dunn had record numbers across the park with 51 doubles teams filling out eight separate draws. We had players from across America as well as players from England and France, which was fantastic to see. The play started on Thursday at noon and finished on Sunday at 6 pm. The longest Jimmy Dunn in history! As well as being the biggest draw the Jimmy Dunn has seen, it was also one of the best-fielded draws in terms of talent we have seen for many years. The Open division final pitted Rob Whitehouse and Steve… Read the Full Story >

Silver Racquet Weekend

Silver Racquet Invitational Tennis A great deal of high-quality play characterized this year’s Silver Racquet Invitational. The draw consisted of players from clubs across the U.S. and England. The draw began with tightly-contested qualification rounds. Dylan Patterson secured the first spot, overcoming a relentlessly scrappy player in Shep Skiff. The second qualifying spot went to Philip Stockton whose bash and dash style edged out the methodical play of Queen’sClub’s Nick Warner. Looking for his third Invitational title in a row, Philadelphia’s Jon Crowell was the top seed and favorite. Crowell faced a draw filled with many talented amateurs pulled from… Read the Full Story >

2019 Hadden Tomes…Play it Loud!

2019 Hadden Tomes…Play it Loud!

By any measure, Hadden Tomes 2019 was a huge success.  Unlike Gold Racquets, Tuxedo’s annual formal event focused on high-quality court tennis, Hadden Tomes is about dressing up, having fun and playing a bit of court tennis. Last year the theme was James Bond; this year guests got to dress up as their favorite music idol or band. The fun began Friday night, with Rich Mueller, Tuxedo’s highly talented guitar player, leading a multi-hour Karaoke session in the Greevy Room at the Tennis House.  Multiple participants eagerly performed crowd-pleasing renditions of songs such as Take It Easy, Free Falling, Dancing Days and… Read the Full Story >

Salve University Team is “Official”

Salve University Team is “Official”

by Trevor Jones On October 15, after two and a half seasons of play, the Salve Regina University Court Tennis Club was finally recognized as an official student organization by the university. In 2018, I had transferred to SRU as a sophomore and was playing varsity tennis for them. I decided to give court tennis a shot, thinking it would be a one-time thing, as it would help me meet my bucket list goal of playing every racquet sport in the world at least once. Instantly, however, I was captivated and wanted to play more. Mike Gooding, head pro at… Read the Full Story >

Merignoff wins US 40s…

Over the weekend the T&R hosted the US 40s. This is a National Championship with the highly coveted USCTA gold and silver medals on the line. The quality of play was extremely high all weekend which was further highlighted in two fantastic finals on Sunday. First up was the doubles featuring Todd Meringoff and Alex Spence against Todd Martin and Jeremy Wintersteen. The ball striking was exceptional with each player bringing their own flavor to the match. Alex Spence and Todd Meringoff came out on top 6/2 6/2, although this scoreline doesn’t reflect the plethora of extended rallies quality on… Read the Full Story >
