Scheduling Committee Report – 16 January 2021

The status quo continues for amateur play. There are rays of hopeful light shining on our game. Georgian Court University remains closed, and Newport and Boston have suffered regional restrictions and closures. But, at the other courts the amount of intraclub play is generally high, averaging 80% or more of normal court usage. At our clubs, there is no meaningful change to rules or attitudes about hosting guests: friendly and wishful but erring on the side of caution. Similarly, while there is hopeful interest in traveling to play, the general feeling is one of patient understanding that this won’t happen… Read the Full Story >

USCTA 23rd Annual Dinner

USCTA 23rd Annual Dinner

By James Zug The USCTA’s 23rd Annual Dinner was a fantastic, if remote reunion for the game of tennis in America.             Nearly a hundred members from across the country attended the Zoom call. After much conversation and admiration of the special Annual Dinner commemorative coasters, President Jim Zug welcomed everyone. He started the meeting with a moment of silence in memory of the friends who died in 2020. They included: Howard G. Cushing, Jr., Robert G. Forbes, David B. Ford, Sr., O.J. Heestand, Daniel J. McSweeney, C. Rodney O’Connor, Arthur B. Whitcomb, Jr., Donald M. Wilkinson, Jr. and Charles R. Williams.  … Read the Full Story >

Philadelphia Wins Percy Cup

Philadelphia Wins Percy Cup

by John Lumley Eight teams competed for the 2020 Percy Cup. Three from Philadelphia, two from New York, and one each from New England, Washington, and Tuxedo. We used a knock-out draw format for the weekend, with first-round losers going into a back draw. On Sunday, the finals of the back draw were played first with Philadelphia 2 squaring off against Tuxedo. We had a fast start to the day as Peter Griffith & Matt Delfiner taking the win 10-7 over Dave Christensen & Alexandre Gallo. Staying on the service end was vital, as both teams served well. 2020 US 50s

2020 US 50s

by John Lumley We had an excellent turnout for the US 50s singles and doubles championships with twenty-one players. In the first round singles, Guy Elzey & Jon Auerbach was the highlight match with Elzey taking the win 3-6, 6-5, 6-3 with some very long and intense points. In the quarterfinals, Jeremy Wintersteen had a convincing win over John Madzin to secure his spot in the semis. Jim Zug had a good first set against Mark Philpott, but Philpott fought back in the second set to take it 6-4 and level the match. Zug, turning up the heat, found some… Read the Full Story >

2020 Greevy Cup Goes to Hudson

2020 Greevy Cup Goes to Hudson

The top two players, Ben Hudson from Boston and Dylan Patterson from New York made it to the last match of this year’s Greevy Cup without dropping a set to the DC locals. Dylan took the first set of the final 6-3 dominating from the service end with a wide variety of serves that seemed to limit Ben’s returns and frustrate him into a number of unforced errors. At four all in the second set there weren’t many unbitten fingernails left in the dedans. Seven deuces later Hudson hit the base of the Tambour two shots in a row and… Read the Full Story >
