The first match of the tournament saw Elizabeth Browning play Kim Kilgore. First set Elizabeth use the home court advantage and win the first set 6-2. Kim fought back in the second set to take it to 5 games all but Elizabeth held on with some great serving to take the final game. It was fantastic to see Katya Johnson out there with such a good attitude playing so well at such a young age but Kathy showed her experience and won to take her spot in the Quarter finals. Tess Browne another youngster played superbly to get the win over Mary Livingston to meet Claire Fahey in the Quarters. All the Quarter final matches went to seeding and Claire Fahey was too strong and secured her place in the final. The second semi of the day found Tara & Penny Lumley battling it out. Tara playing well and retrieving superbly took the first set 6-3. Penny took a lead in the second set with her returning and length game going 4-3 up and then 5-4 up but Tara eager not to let it go to a third set played some great Tennis to get the victory 6-3 6-5. Claire Fahey playing great Tennis was too much for Tara in the first set taking it 6-0. Tara had a flurry of good balls and serving to take one game in the middle of the second set but Claire too consistent won the 2016-17 Ladies U.S. Open 6-0 6-1.
In the doubles it was pretty straight forward for the number 1 & 2 seeds who met in the final. Tara & Penny came out firing in the first set with great drag serves and aggressive returning. The won the first set 6-1. Claire and Kim started off better in the second set and settled in. Tara & Penny were 3-2 up 40-15 up but Kim played some excellent points and volleying to get them back and win that game. From 3 all Claire and Kim didn’t miss to take the second set 6-3. Tied at one set all it was all to play for. Claire kept the pace up on the return of serve and Kim was very steady at the end and proved too much for the Lumley’s to take the final set 6-3. Claire Fahey & Kim Kilgore win the 2016-17 Ladies U.S. Open 1-6 6-3 6-3!
