Fourteen players entered the national 50-plus level Wharton Cup at Westwood in January. Nine traveling from other US clubs. All three seeds made it to the semi-finals. The tournament’s biggest upset came in the first semifinal when unseeded John Eder from Boston beat Jericho Seguin, the #1 seed from Westwood, 6/4 2/6 6/3. The other semi between Zach Pallis from Tuxedo and Westwood newcomer Nick Bakos also went to three sets. Zach struggled with Nick’s kick Tennis serve, accentuated by the grippy new walls in Washington. Despite his speed, in the final Bakos couldn’t find a way out of playing his regular topspin Tennis game, and lefty Eder who at 6’4” had developed a railroad overnight by watching YouTube videos of Riviere and Virgona was now reading the court perfectly. John won 5/6, 6/3, 6/3.
