The 2023 Greevy Cup was held on January 28-29th at the National Tennis Club, on the grounds of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. This year’s USCTA level championship for the 20’s handicap division displayed some extremely competitive tennis. The draw was on the smaller side due to some last-minute withdrawals, with five players representing the NTC and three making the trip down from Boston.
The weekend started off with three straight NTC vs. T&R matchups. The first match was a very strong showing from Andrew Peabody, who emerged victorious and advanced to the semifinals. Next up was Shawn Herlihy vs. Eliot Van Buskirk. Eliot pulled off an impressive upset to advance to the semis; however, he was not the only Van Buskirk to succeed on the first day of play. The next matchup was Tom Van Buskirk vs. Dave Tedeschi. All the 9 pm practice sessions between Tom and Eliot paid off, as Tom pulled off a three-set stunner to move on to the semis. The final main draw matchup of the day was the only NTC vs. NTC matchup, as Jeremy Wintersteen advanced past Brian Owens to complete the semifinal draw.
Sunday, the final day of play, had some incredible matches. The first semifinal kicked off between Andrew Peabody and Tom Van Buskirk. The match was full of long deuce games, but Andrew fought through and won 6/1 6/2 to advance to the final. On the other side of the draw, Jeremy Wintersteen battled Eliot Van Buskirk in an almost two-and-a-half-hour match. This was a fantastic all-Newport matchup, and Jeremy Wintersteen took the three-set match 6/1, 5/6,6/4. In the final, the one and two seeds faced off for another battle of a match. The upper gallery was packed, as was the dedans. Peabody took the first set, but Wintersteen fought back and used his home-court advantage to take the match 4/6, 6/2, 6/3, and win the 2023 Greevy Cup!
Congrats to Jeremy, and thank you to all who helped out this weekend! Thank you to all the players for attending, and we look forward to the next event here at the NTC.
