THE CHERRY BLOSSOM DOUBLES ‘18 By Ryan Carey As always, we theme the Cherry Blossom to the current year, which is “18”, but we decided to also have the sport of Jai Alai as a focus of the weekend. Jai Alai is the North American version of the game of Basque Pelota. Basque Pelota is a cousin of Court Tennis, and, just like Court Tennis, it was originally played in a courtyard with handball and paddle variations. However, in the mid-1800s, a curved basket with a sewn glove evolved as the equipment of choice and quickly became the popular style… Read the Full Story >

By John Lumley We had eight strong teams descend upon Philadelphia for the 2018 Percy Cup. Friday’s play saw a great start from Newport only dropping 1 game from the maximum they could have gotten. Philadelphia 1 team also had a dream start winning all of their matches in their first game. New York 2 even though they lost 2 of their matches got to 6 in 2 of them meant it kept them in it leading into Saturday. With all of the players around it was a great atmosphere down in the basement and everyone was excited for the… Read the Full Story >

by Mary Livingston This past weekend the Racquet Club of Philadelphia hosted the 2018 Ladies Invitational, a level singles tournament for U.S. based players. Seventeen women entered from Boston, D.C., Newport, Tuxedo, and of course, the host club, and there were a number of hard-fought matches across both A and B draws. The outstanding match of the tournament was the A semi-final between Newport’s Brenda Sabbag and Philly’s Melissa Purcell. The two veteran players kept nearly every game close over three sets with hard, well-placed, shot after shot. Melissa took the first set 6-5 before Brenda came back to take… Read the Full Story >
