2003 Casino Cup

Well, the weather was wild and so was the tennis, from what I hear.  Safely 3000 miles and three time zones away, I only have secondhand knowledge of what went on at the National Tennis Club this past weekend, but when the dust settled, the results were: Berry Packham, playing off a 26, beat Doug Spear (playing off a 17 handicap) 10-6 in the main draw singles final.    For the record, Berry was down 2-7 to Ross Cann in the opening round and came back to win, 10-9.  Way to go, Berry! First round losers went into a consolation. This… Read the Full Story >

2003 Boomerang Cup

WITH ACHING livers, steak and snag-filled bellies and mostly unbruised egos, twenty-two Americans have been slowly limping home from the greatest by-annual fortnight of tennis on the planet, the Boomerang.      There is nothing quite like it. Every other January the Royal Melbourne Tennis Club hosts a gargantuan party. There are two tournaments run concurrently: the Boomerang, a team competition, and the RMTC Handicap Doubles. Both are doubles. Both involve round-robin play with the top teams going through to a knockout draw. Both are handicapped, with the abilities ranging from Julian Snow and his 6+ to Jean Ferris and her… Read the Full Story >

Newport Goes to Tuxedo

Newport Goes to Tuxedo

October, 2003: A crew of players went down to Tuxedo Park to help begin what we hope will be an annual Challenge Cup. This year the Newport club was represented by Luke Danby, Alex Walsh, Chris Cline, Ross Cann, Mark Lewinstein and David Enstone. Greg Van Schaack played host and Tuxedo provided a wonderful setting and atmosphere for the matches. Although Newport lost two matches to three, all but one of the matches went to three sets. After a marvelous dinner Saturday night in the Tennis House, the team played a series of social matches on Sunday. For those of… Read the Full Story >

Wharton Plays Farewell Match in Court Tennis

On Sunday, in his final match as the Head Professional at the National Tennis Club in the Newport Casino, former Jamestown, RI resident George Wharton, together with his partner, Mark Devine of Aiken, South Caroline, were narrowly defeated in an exciting Pell Cup match against Time Chisholm of New York City and Josh Bainton, George’s successor, of Newport. Chisholm is the world’s second-ranked court tennis player. Wharton and Devine lost the first set 6-5, and the second 6-4 and pressed their much younger opponents fiercely throughout the match. The evening before this match, Wharton and his former assistant, Jacques Faulise,… Read the Full Story >
