The Tennis & Racquet Club was pleased to host the Jimmy Knott over the October 23rd weekend. Formerly known as the Boston “A” Invitational, the tournament was renamed in memory of Jimmy Knott the year after he won it. This year’s small but solid field had players from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia in it.The first round went as generally expected but with good results from Alex Spence taking Shawn Herlihy to three sets and Jeff Horine taking George Bell to 5/6 in the second. Camden Riviere won his second consecutive European Open at Lord’s this week. In the final, Riviere played Rob Fahey. Fahey, leading the match 2 sets to 1, retired in the 4th set. The score was 3/6,3/6,6/4,2/1 retired. On the way to the final, Riviere defeated Rich Smith, David Woodman and Ben Matthews. The next stop for both Riviere and Smith is the French Open in Bordeaux, which begins on October 18th. Steve Virgona will alos be competing in the French Open. The US Junior Doubles playing for the Lieb Cup were played in Newport this past weekend. Ranging in age from 8 to 21, ten enthusiastic juniors from Newport, Tuxedo, Aiken, and Seacourt gathered for a weekend of matches, drills, food, and camaraderie. There was even a quiz on court tennis history, etiquette, and current facts that were taught to the kids over the weekend. It was a great success! New York played Newport on Wednesday, October 7, in the first National League match of the season. The National League, organized by the pros, provides match play between professionals at the various clubs. The matches are played in one night, with 2 singles matches, followed by a doubles. The singles matches are best of 3 sets and the doubles is a 10 game pro set. It’s always great tennis and a fun way to spend a few hours! Look for the complete schedule to be posted soon!!! The 2009 US 50’s Singles and Doubles finals, originally scheduled for Boston, have been postponed and will be played in New York. The date is to be announced. The finals will be: Singles – Simon Aldrich vs. George Bell Doubles – Aldrich/ Charlie Johnstone vs. Bell/ Greg Van Schaack Dates will be posted as soon as they are available.
