~Riviere Out Guns Gunn

Aiken – Camden Riviere defeated Ruaraidh Gunn in the second leg of their Eliminator. The score was 6/0,6/0,6/0. Riviere will play Steve Virgona in the Final Eliminator. That will be the best of 13 sets and will take place in Tuxedo on March 18,20 & 21. ~US Junior Nationals

While the “big guns” were pounding it out in the Tuxedo Gold racquet, 17 “future stars” descended upon Washington for the 2010 Junior National Singles. Despite piles of snow, the kids were not even interested in venturing out as their focus was totally on tennis. Ranging in age from 8-18, with some barely able to reach into the trough for balls and others towering over the adults, the juniors played through the weekend. Using a complex scoring system, each junior played numerous matches. ~Anne Boleyn& Women’s Invitational

Chatter was a “flurry”…. There were predictions of inclement weather for the mid-east northward to Philadelphia starting last Friday Feb 5.  Should or could the Anne Boleyn and the 1st  Women’s Invitational tournaments be played in Philadelphia Feb 5-7?  That being said, not even heavy snowfall outside or even on the court prevented the tournaments from being played as scheduled. ~Greevy Cup Recap

From January 22nd through January 24th, the Greevy Cup was contested for by players with handicaps between 20-29 at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. Three of the four semifinalists are veterans of the game but it was the one newcomer, Jon Crowell, that took home the honors. After outlasting John Madzin 6-Love in the 3rd set on Saturday afternoon, Crowell met Andrew Purcell in the final match on Sunday morning. Purcell survived a marathon semifinal earlier Sunday morning against Peter Vogt, lasting an amazing 2+ hours.
