* Pickin Wins 2011 Etchebaster UPDATED!
Tom Pickin hit the grille on match point to win the 2011 Etchebaster Tournament in Newport this past weekend. The men’s amateur singles event is open to players who: Have less than one year of experience, or Have more than one year, but less than 2 years and have a handicap of 25 and over, or Have a handicap of over 30, regardless of experience. The tournament attracted only entries from Boston and Newport. Sixteen players, evenly divided between the clubs, made up the draw. Prince’s Court was pleased to host this year’s Wharton (50-59) and Hickey (60+) level championships. Thanks to the efforts of our tireless leaders, Ivan Ronaldson and Phil Shannon, the weekend treated players, members and newfound fans to thrilling tennis. Friday’s match of the day pitted two future Prince’s Court stars against one another. Tristan Motz, 15, and Erik Barker, 9, sons of legends John Motz and Bill Barker, wowed the gallery with their incredible digs, forces, volleys, and stellar sportsmanship. * Burke Cup – Spangler Wins!
Arnold Spangler of New York added another level championship to his collection by winning the 2011 Burke Cup in Newport this past weekend. Hesitant to travel because of the weather forecast, Spangler opted to make the trip to Newport at the last minute. Good decision as the weather turned out to be nice and Spangler was on his game! Playing two matches on Saturday, Spangler played the match of the weekend in the Saturday night semifinal against Ken Forton of Boston. Steve Virgona defeated Rob Fahey in the finals of the 2011 Links Pump Australian Open. The Final Score was 6/5 6/5 6/4. Virgona then teamed up with Fahey to win the Doubles title!
