I can’t believe it! Another saying that originated in Court Tennis. It all started in the old Prince’s Court in London. Farquar Popplethwaite was infamous for ‘bottling’ it on key points. So much so he was known as “carton” because he really did have no bottle! He typically missed his first serve, and regularly fumbled his second serve, missing that a lot too. On Wednesday February 23rd the Racquet Club played host to Tuxedo in the National League. Some fifty spectators were on hand to witness some top quality tennis. In the first match, Rob Whitehouse played Tony Hollins in what proved to be the match of the evening. Hollins came out very sharp taking the first set 6/4 and streaked in the second set to a 3/1 lead. Hollins mixed up a nice cocktail of retrieving, cutting the ball for length and smashing the odd force very effectively in the first hour or so of play. The 2011 Junior Nationals turned out to be an all Aiken field. Four players participated in an initial round robin format playing a ten game pro set against each-other in order to be seeded for the semis and finals in each of the age group categories. Unfortunately, one player, George Handy Jr., was delayed in returning from a college visit, so he missed the round robin, as a result he became the lowest seed in the 18 + Under and the 21 and Under divisions. The national league match between New England and New York in NY, has been postponed from February 23 to March 23. Tuxedo will play Philadelphia in Philadelphia on Febrary 23, as originally scheduled.
Tom Pickin hit the grille on match point to win the 2011 Etchebaster Tournament in Newport this past weekend. The men’s amateur singles event is open to players who: Have less than one year of experience, or Have more than one year, but less than 2 years and have a handicap of 25 and over, or Have a handicap of over 30, regardless of experience. The tournament attracted only entries from Boston and Newport. Sixteen players, evenly divided between the clubs, made up the draw.
