For the third year, intrepid Northeastern court tennis players packed in to the house that Gould built in scenic Lakewood, New Jersey for the 2011 Lakewood Invitational. True, Lakewood is a strange mix of influences these days, but parts of the Georgian Court University campus, where the court still remains, appear just as they did a hundred years ago. Six US-based pros are competing in the singles and doubles tournament: Camden Riviere, Rich Smith, Tim Chisholm, Mike Gooding, Steve Virgona and James Stout. John Edmund Slater, age 89, passed away Sunday, September 4, 2011after an extended illness. Born in 1922 in Yonkers, New York, John was a true depression-era baby. He was the only child of Margaret and John Slater, a copy-rewrite editor for the Yonkers daily newspaper. In high school John excelled in both academics and tennis and received a scholarship to the Cornell School of Engineering where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. We regret to announce that Robert M. “Bobby” Goodyear of Aiken, SC passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2011. Bobby Goodyear loved the Aiken Tennis Club – serving as its president for 35 years. A former lawn and court tennis player himself, Goodyear, after giving up the games, loved watching his daughter, Ginny Goodyear and granddaughter, Dana Goodyear Kopald, progression in the game. His daughter, Margie Goodyear, although living in Colorado, would travel to Aiken from time-to-time to play as well. What most people in the court tennis world will remember his genuine hospitality. The US Team comprised of: Pat Winthrop (Capt.), Dylan Ward, Garrett Gates and Tom Pickin travelled to Melbourne for the biennial team event. Matches were played over 2 days – singles and doubles.
