The 2013 Ladies’ Invitational was held on a bright and crisp spring weekend in Newport. 13 women competed, including newcomer Ruth Kelley from Philadelphia. Look for Ruth to figure prominently in women’s tennis in the future; with only six months’ experience, she exhibited tremendous talent. But for the present, experience was not to be denied, as the singles finalists, Sheila Reilly and Petra Napolitano, teamed up to take the doubles from Ruth and Amy MacMillan, overcoming a slow start to do so, 5/6, 6/1, 6/2. This years Knox Handicap Doubles tournament featured 13 teams, which were spread into two pools of four and one pool of five teams for round robin play. The top six teams emerged into the quarterfinal round on Saturday evening. Gary Swantner and Ryan Carey received a handicap of receive 15 and played very well in their defeat of Rakesh Jasani and Michael Sullivan. The 2013 Cherry Blossom Doubles Tournament was held at Prince’s Court in Washington April 11th-14th. 26 teams participated in the tournament with players coming from Newport, Boston, Philadelphia, Aiken, France and the UK. The theme for this year’s tournament was “Lucky ‘13”. Players were outfitted with good luck charms (shamrock wrist bands, a rabbits foot, ladybug ring etc.). Pre-match racquet spinning was not allowed, instead players had to choose 1 of 3 lucky alternatives – flip a lucky coin, cut cards, or break a wishbone. The semifinals of the National League were played in New York on April 2. New York beat Chicago. Barney Tanfield (NY) defeated Gabe Kinzler 5/6 6/2 6/1 James Stout (NY) defeated Steven Virgona 6/3 6/3 Virgona/Kinzler (CHI) defeated Stout/Tanfield (NY) 8/6 New York wins 6/1 and will now take on Team New England in the Finals.
