As of September 1st, Camden Riviere will become the Number 1 Ranked Player in the World! Since the world ranking system was created in 1991, no American has been ranked number one in the world. Rob Fahey has been number one for the last twenty years but in late August 2013 Camden Riviere passed Fahey. Riviere has had a spectacular year, since coming off an injury that sidelined him for most of the 2011/12 season. The 2013 Pell Cup was held in Newport on August 14-18. A full field of players representing clubs from the U.S, and overseas were in attendance for Newport’s signature event. The 2013 Velvet Rope was held in Newport on July 19-20. The doubles tournament attracted a sporty group of players for a weekend of doubles play and parties. The tournament was organized by Marc Lewinstein and Brian Owens. A special shout out to Marc…who not only was a tournament organizer, but played a match at 8:30 on Saturday morning and then raced across the bridge to do the Save the Bay Annual 2 mile swim! The Under 18 had a four player round robin format. Erik Barker from Washington hit a very clean ball all weekend and didn’t drop a match in the singles. Evan McDonnell ( Phila) & Erik Barker took the Doubles with a win over newcomers to the game Frank McDermott ( Phila) & Drew Callahan ( Phila) . Camden Riviere captured his fourth consecutive U.S. Professional Singles title (playing for the Schochet Cup) in Newport capping off a spectacular year for the 26 year old lefty from Aiken. Just a year earlier, coming off a long shoulder injury, Riviere surprised everyone, including himself, by winning the 2012 U.S. Pro Singles.
