The Aiken Tennis Club was pleased to host the 16th Annual Calhoun Witham Handicap Doubles Tournament beginning on Wednesday November 11 and concluding on Sunday November 15, 2015. The Tournament was previously known as the Aiken 30+ Handicap and was renamed the Calhoun Witham Cup following the death of A. Calhoun Witham, MD a devotee of high handicap court tennis and a beloved member of the Aiken Tennis Club. Team BOS/WSH (Riviere, Hollins, Mackenzie) defeated Team CHI/PHL (Virgona/Lumley) to win the 2014/15 USCTA National League title last night at Prince’s Court. Results: Lumley def. The Percy Cup lasted 3 days with 8 teams of 6 clubs battling it out for the coveted Percy Cup. The matches were fought in great spirit with every point battled out fairly. Division 1 it was Washington 2 who came out victors with #1 seeds Greg Faron/Vernon Cassin, #2 seeds Brit Elmore/Dan Sternberg and #3 seeds Melanie Clarke/Jason Bennett who overcame Philadelphia 1 and New York winning by 3 games. 34th Annual Jimmy Dunn Tournament Weekend This year’s Jimmy Dunn hit record numbers with 25 draws and over 218 matches played starting Thursday at noon and ending Sunday at 6pm. There was record numbers in the squash draws and the tennis as always was sold out 3 weeks in advance with 78 players. The level of tennis this weekend was some of the best quality we have seen for a number of years. The racquets draws saw massive numbers as we added age group categories this year. Witham Handicap Doubles 2014 by Dacre Stoker The Aiken Tennis Club hosted the 2014 Calhoun Witham Handicap Doubles Tournament Nov. 14-16. We attracted a field of 20 teams with players representing the following clubs: Prince’s Court Washington, National Tennis Club Newport, Tennis and Rackets Club Boston, Racquet Club of Chicago Tuxedo, Lakewood, NYR&T and of course Aiken. The tournament was divided into two divisions, the A division had 8 teams with handicaps 44 and below, the B Division had 12 teams with handicaps 45 and above. The Singles Championship: The 2014 Ladies US Open kicked off with four round of 16 singles matches on Friday November 7th. Helen Grassi and Alex Klara were the first match of the championship at high noon with Grassi prevailing in straight sets. Rackets aficionado Shi-Nan Zhang and Petra Napolitano were next on the docket. Napolitano was determined to keep her foot on the pedal before Zhang got the hang of the bounces and chases, as her comfort level increased game by game.
