Less than 24 hours after the final of the US Open Doubles, Philadelphia turned its attention to the 2013 Wharton Cup. The Wharton Cup is a national level singles event for players with handicaps between 50 and 59. Eleven players from Philadelphia, Newport and Washington competed for the title.
Bill Rives from Newport and David Berry from Washington put up a good fight, but it was the Philadelphians that dominated the weekend. Perhaps they were inspired after watching 10 days of the US Open on their home court! Philadelphians Joe Spera and Chris Bernabei made it to the final. The ambidextrous Bernabei, switching from left hand to right hand depending upon the shot, proved to be too much for Spera. Despite Spera’s quickness and all around solid game, Bernabei prevailed in straight sets, 6/3, 6/0.
Rives made it to the final of the back draw to face Philadelphian Michael Gale. Gale’s quickness and hard hitting won out over Rives’ more classic game. The score was 10/5 to Gale.
