One of the first tournaments of the year, the 2005 Jimmy Knott Memorial at the Tennis & Racquet Club in Boston had a small but solid field of contestants. In the quarterfinals, Matt Porter, Rob McLane, and Jeremy Wintersteen (all from the T&R) prevailed as did Mike McElroy (Hurlingham and Queens Clubs). Porter had a close match against Newport’s Pat Winthrop, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. A relatively newcomer to the game but a quick study as he is a lawn tennis professional, unseeded Porter defeated #1 seed McLane in a very well played semifinal and Wintersteen defeated McElroy. In the final, Porter got off to a quick start going up 5-1, before taking the first set 6-5. In the second set, Wintersteen made a number of unforced errors and Porter played well winning the set and match 6-3. Congratulations to Porter, a US Court Tennis Preservation Foundation player who has been successfully working on his game with Jimmy Burke!
