2018 USCTA 50’s Singles & Doubles
The Tuxedo Club
The Tuxedo Club hosted the 2018 USCTA 50’s Singles & Doubles Championships March 2nd—4th. This event had a decidedly Tuxedo feel to it as 6 of the 8 participants were from The Tuxedo Club.
In the singles, there were no real surprises in the quarter-finals as Dan Laukitis, Shawn Herlihy and Alan McHugh booed their spots in the semi-finals. The Laukitis/Cohen match was much closer than the score as Cohen led 3/2 in the first set with game points for a 4/2 lead along with numerous close games for the duration of the match. The semi-finals matched Tuxedo stalwarts and doubles partners Dan Laukitis vs. Guy Devereux and Boston T&R Member Shawn Herlihy vs. Alan McHugh. Laukitis put a scare in Devereux before succumbing 6/3 6/2 and McHugh & Herlihy provided for some entertaining tennis with McHugh winning 6/4 6/3. The Final was an all Tuxedo affair as Devereux took on McHugh. In a back and forth first set with numerous ‘unique’ bounces Devereux squeaked out the first set 6/5. The second set saw some very good tennis with Devereux keeping a slight edge throughout and won 6/3.
Devereux & Laukitis defeated Dave Christensen & Todd Yannuzzi in the top half of the draw 6/1 6/1. The bottom half saw a very good match with Alan McHugh & Joe Capella defeating Shawn Herlihy & Anders Cohen 6/5 6/3. The Final was barn burner with Mchugh & Capella prevailing 3/6 6/5 6/4. Kudos to Alan McHugh and Guy Devereux persevering throughout the weekend as their bodies spent a number of hours on court.
