Meringoff wins Jimmy Knott Memorial Singles Tournament

Second seeded Todd Meringoff weathered 14 sets on court on Saturday and a 4-2 first set deficit on Sunday to defeat the top seeded Brook Hazelton 6/4 6/2 in the finals of the Jimmy Knott Memorial held at Boston’s Tennis & Racquet Club in Boston from October 14-16. On Saturday, Meringoff played five sets of court tennis singles, seven sets of racquets singles and two sets of racquets doubles in the accompanying Western Open Racquets Championship.
Meringoff had reached the finals after a hard fought 6/4 2/6 6/3 victory over the fourth seeded Jeremy Wintersteen in the semi finals on Saturday afternoon. Hazelton had reached the finals after overcoming 4-1 and 5-3 deficits to defeat third seeded Jeff Horine 6/5 6/4 in the semi finals.
In the back draw, Nick Baker, a sub-20 handicap who lost to Meringoff 6/4 6/2 in the first round, defeated Matt Breuer in the final 6/1 6/3. The Jimmy Knott tournament, formerly known as the Boston “A” Invitational, boasted a draw that included eight players with singles or doubles handicaps better than 20.
