Over the weekend of October 7-9, 2016, junior players gathered in Newport at the National Tennis Club to play in the Lieb Cup National Junior Doubles. The tournament attracted 12 players from Newport, Washington and Tuxedo.
With Tim Chisholm and Camden Riviere running the event, the fun factor was high in this round-robin, developmental event. Format featured round robin-play in the initial rounds for all age groups, allowing each player to partner with every other player at some stage. Number of games won was tallied for each individual player to determine seeding in the later elimination rounds. This format allowed for lots of tennis experience for newer players while still providing competitive play in later rounds for more experienced players.
In addition to the matches, the event featured instructional clinics at both the rookie & veteran levels, as well as a skills clinic that pitted “Team Camden” vs. “Team Tim”. Additionally, the group of more experienced players participated in a doubles match in which the junior players took turns partnering with either Tim or Camden- a true treat for our juniors to be on court with these two legends of the game.
Seeding for final matches paired the #1 seed with #4, playing against the #2 & #3 seeds. Final results as follows:
U13 division
Dawson Chisholm/Theo Yanuzzi 8/7 over Ben Dickinson/Christian Behan
U15 division
Dawson Chisholm/MaryKate Boyle 8/5 over Ben Dickinson/Ciao Rodolfo
U17/19 division
Peter Dickinson/Theo Yanuzzi 8/4 over Ben Dickinson/Dawson Chisholm
Sincere thanks to the US Court Tennis Preservation Foundation and USCTA for their continued support of this, and other junior events.
