Jimmy Dunn Recap:
This year’s Jimmy Dunn was another big one with 154 entrants playing in 16 different categories through Racquets, Doubles Squash, Singles Squash and Doubles Tennis. The Singles Squash was the biggest we have ever had due to the 3 new courts. The matches started Thursday at 2pm and finished Sunday at 5pm with 275 matches being played in total. Seeing the Racquet Club and the whole club being used in full capacity would make the founders proud of where the club has got to. The strength of each draw was at an all time high with each division being fiercely contested. The Pro Shop added in an Elite 8 for Singles Squash being played on the new Specter courts. The Level of play was spectacular and was so a treat seeing so a high level of play at the Jimmy Dunn. Dane Sharp (Merion Squash Pro) took the title over Fabio Cechin (Merion Head Professional) 3 -1. The A division saw some young Racquet Club talent display some very good squash with Spencer Yager taking Henry Miller 3-0. The B division had Rodney Stewart (HVCC) a familiar face to the Jimmy Dunn event finally win a title over much improved Murphy Barton 3-1. The C Division saw a dark horse from Racquet Club’s Mike Barton as he took some seeded players to make the final only to come up short to a veteran of the game Ray Johnston. The D Division which had the biggest draw in the history of the Jimmy Dunn saw a Washington youngster Noah Motz overcome top seed Liz Browning in 4 tight games. The Ladies draw which is a first in Jimmy Dunn history saw Morgan McSenn outlast Lynn Penn who had a tournament to remember.
The Racquets final was high intensity as well with Peter Cipriano and Jon Crowell going blow for blow in a three-game battle. Cipriano nipped Crowell in the third to take his second consecutive title. In the Racquets Doubles Final saw the young fellows Jack Forman and Felix White succumb to the experienced Jon Crowell and Peter Cipriano.
The Tennis is where the Jimmy Dunn Doubles originated from was filled as usual. The Racquet Club did very well with fellow Racquet Club Members winning four out of the six divisions. The Open saw the 2 time champions Barney Tanfield and Lex Miron easily retain their title over Peter Cipriano and Leon Smart. In the A Draw Club Champions Kenny Soffer and Tom Brownlie proved that was no fluke beating the top seeds in the Semi Finals and then get another scalp in the Final overcoming Jeremy Wintersteen and PJ Yeatman. In the B Draw saw Gary Swantner play smart, tactical and consistent Court Tennis throughout the weekend which stunned the RC Pro Shop. Gary and Dylan Ward beat the Motz cousins in 3 hotly contested sets. The C Draw Bruce Katz and Schuyler Wickes win a round robin format just nipping Rob Armstrong and Jack Forman by winning an extra set to take the title. The D Draw had another Washington Racquet battle with Washington’s George Ughetta and Connor beat Racquet Club’s Mike Barton and Lucas Garvin 10-6. The E Draw saw Tim McManus who is the most improved for the event and Jeremy Thompson beat Liz Browning and Mary Livingston 10 games to 7.
The Jimmy Dunn Dinner Dance on Saturday night was one to remember. The Pro Shop did not peter out the crew as they had some very good footwork on the dance. Sydney Crowell and Katelynn did an amazing job with the set up and the Cuban theme was a massive hit with everyone especially Lou Habina who loved the cigars in the grille room all night. Well done to Chef Craig as compliments were going around all day on Sunday on how good the food was.
We look forward to seeing you all next year for what we hope is the biggest one yet!
