We regret to announce that Robert M. “Bobby” Goodyear of Aiken, SC passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2011.
Bobby Goodyear loved the Aiken Tennis Club – serving as its president for 35 years. A former lawn and court tennis player himself, Goodyear, after giving up the games, loved watching his daughter, Ginny Goodyear and granddaughter, Dana Goodyear Kopald, progression in the game. His daughter, Margie Goodyear, although living in Colorado, would travel to Aiken from time-to-time to play as well.
What most people in the court tennis world will remember his genuine hospitality. He was a conduit for people from all over the world to come to Aiken, play tennis and play a round of golf at Augusta. Goodyear could often be found in the dedans watching matches or driving a cart while his guests played golf. Whether it was tennis, golf, or hosting players, Bobby Goodyear made a trip to Aiken a memorable one.
In this spirit, the United States Court Tennis Association (USCTA) recognized Mr. Goodyear at the 2010 Annual Awards Dinner, with the creation of the Goodyear Hospitality Award as a tribute for all he has done over the years.
The Aiken Tennis Club will be holding a “Celebration of Life” at the Club on Saturday, July 30 at 6:00 PM. For information, contact Dacre Stoker as dacre@bellsouth.net
The family has not announced funeral arrangements.
